They can live over 30 years, both in the wild and in captivity.
Pełniejszy materiał źródłowy / excerpt
Orangutans are great apes native to the rainforests of Indonesia and Malaysia. They are now found only in parts of Borneo and Sumatra, but during the Pleistocene they ranged throughout Southeast Asia and South China. Classified in the genus Pongo, orangutans were originally considered to be one species. In 1996, they were divided into two species: the Bornean orangutan (P. pygmaeus, with three subspecies) and the Sumatran orangutan (P. abelii); a third species, the Tapanuli orangutan (P. tapanuliensis), was identified definitively in 2017. The orangutans are the only surviving members of the subfamily Ponginae, which diverged genetically from the other hominids (gorillas, chimpanzees, and humans) between 19.3 and 15.7 million years ago. The most arboreal of the great apes, orangutans spend most of their time in trees. They have proportionally long arms and short legs, and have reddish-brown hair covering their bodies. Dominant adult males develop distinctive cheek pads or flanges and make long calls that attract females and intimidate rivals; younger subordinate males do not and more resemble adult females. Orangutans are the most solitary of the great apes: social bonds occur primarily between mothers and their dependent offspring. Fruit is the most important component of an orangutan's diet, but they will also eat vegetation, bark, honey, insects and bird eggs. They can live…

The bonobo (; Pan paniscus), also historically called the pygmy chimpanzee, is the smallest species of great ape and one of the two making up the genus Pan (the other being the chimpanzee, Pan troglodytes). While bonobos are today recognized as a distinct species, they were initially thought to be a subspecies of Pan troglodytes, because of the physical similarities between the two species. Taxonomically, members of the chimpanzee/bonobo subtribe Panina—composed entirely by the genus Pan—are collectively termed panins. Bonobos are distinguished from common chimpanzees by relatively long limbs, pinker lips, a darker face, a tail-tuft through adulthood, and longer, parted hair on their heads.…

Examining Paternal Care in Captive Sumatran and Hybrid Orangutans.. In the wild, orangutans live in an individual fission-fusion social system. This semi-isolated lifestyle means females are the sole caretakers of infants. However, recent social media posts from zoos and sanctuaries depict adult male orangutans engaging in behavior suggesting paternal involvement in offspring care. In captivity, orangutans are often housed socially, allowing fathers to interact with their offspring and raising the question of whether, and how, orangutans may potentially demonstrate paternal behavior. We examined interactions among immature offspring and their family groups in captive, hybrid (Pongo pygmaeus…

Terrestrial Positional Behavior of Wild Pongo pygmaeus.. Objectives As a predominantly arboreal animal in the wild, the terrestrial positional behavior of Pongo pygmaeus is poorly understood, having been studied almost exclusively in captive settings. This study uses camera-trap footage to provide the first assessment of wild orangutan terrestrial locomotor and postural behavior on natural substrates. Materials and methods Video footage of orangutans from motion-activated cameras in the Gunung Palung National Park, West Kalimantan, Indonesia was collected over a five-year period. The resulting 100 instances of orangutan terrestriality were analyzed to document incidences of positional behav…
