Repeatability and reliability of kinetic and temporospatial gait parameters measured with a pressure-sensitive treadmill in healthy cats.. Objectives Interest in feline kinetic gait variables has increased substantially. This study aimed to assess repeatability and intersession reliability of kinetic gait analysis in healthy cats using a pressure-sensitive treadmill. Methods Healthy client-owned cats ( n = 9) and cats housed at the cattery of the Chair of Animal Nutrition and Dietetics ( n = 5), without orthopedic abnormalities based on history, examination, and subjective gait analysis, were enrolled. Cats (mean body weight: 5.2 ± 0.9 kg, age: 4.1 ± 1.7 years) were acclimated to a pressure…

Evaluation of a pressure-sensitive treadmill in normal cats.. Objectives To evaluate a pressure-sensitive treadmill in normal cats to determine feasibility as a tool for kinetic gait assessment. Materials and methods Institutional ethical approval was obtained. Cats with no evidence of orthopaedic disease were prospectively enrolled and acclimatised to the pressure-sensitive treadmill. Cats were gaited until three valid trials of 10 gait cycles each were obtained. After normalising to % body weight, peak vertical force, vertical impulse, symmetry index, step phase duration, step length and time for data collection were reported. Results Fifty cats with body weights of 4.9 ± 1.1 kg met inclu…

In human biology, handedness is an individual's preferential use of one hand, known as the dominant hand, due to and causing it to be stronger, faster or more dextrous. The other hand, comparatively often the weaker, less dextrous or simply less subjectively preferred, is called the non-dominant hand. In a study from 1975 on 7,688 children in US grades 1–6, left handers comprised 9.6% of the sample, with 10.5% of male children and 8.7% of female children being left-handed. Globally, about 90% of people are right-handed. Handedness is often defined by one's writing hand. It is fairly common for people to prefer to do a particular task with a particular hand. Mixed-handed people change hand p…

Smilodon is a genus of extinct felids. It is one of the best-known saber-toothed predators and prehistoric mammals. Although commonly known as the saber-toothed tiger, it was not closely related to the tiger or other modern cats, belonging to the extinct subfamily Machairodontinae, with an estimated date of divergence from the ancestor of living cats around 20 million years ago. Smilodon was one of the last surviving machairodonts alongside Homotherium. Smilodon lived in the Americas during the Pleistocene to early Holocene epoch (2.5 mya – at latest 8,200 years ago). The genus was named in 1842 based on fossils from Brazil; the generic name means 'scalpel' or 'two-edged knife' combined wit…
