Flash fiction is a fiction narrative in the form of a very short piece of writing, which still offers a character arc or implies a larger story. Some commentators believe flash fiction possesses a unique literary quality in its ability to hint at that larger story. It is briefer even that the traditional format of the short story. Varieties are sometimes defined by word count, including the six-word story, the 280-character story ("twitterature"), the "dribble" (also known as the "minisaga", 50 words), and the "drabble" (also known as "microfiction", 100 words).

Engaging Readers Cognitively and Affectively in Flash Fiction. This article sets out to explore flash fiction, understood as very short forms of prose narrative and taking it to be a mode of writing that only properly developed in recent decades, although not without prominent antecedents going back through centuries of literary history. It addresses the issues of defining flash fiction, as well as its formal features, outlining their typical structures as well as speculating on how flash fiction may engage readers in its own characteristic ways. I argue that while retaining the basics of narrative requirements, such as representing events and being able to generate mental representations o…

The flash fiction of Ye. Hutsalo in examination of literary critics. The article discovers scientific and critical researches devoted to flash fiction of Ye. Hutsalo. The review of scientific investigation allowed finding out that author`s heritage has been in the focus of literary criticism for many years. However, depending on the political and ideological directives, an emphasis of the study of his prose was changeable. Such literary critics as V. Andrienko, Yu. Badzio, L. Bakhaeva speak lightly of Ye. Hutsalo creativity, criticizing him for retreating from the socialist canon. Truth be told, a modern scholar G. Sivokin undermined the views of these critics on the associativity of the au…

Gothic fiction, often referred to as Gothic horror (primarily in the 20th century), is a literary aesthetic of fear and haunting. The name of the genre is derived from the Renaissance-era use of the word "gothic", as a pejorative term meaning medieval and barbaric, which itself originated from Gothic architecture and in turn the Goths. The first work to be labelled as Gothic was Horace Walpole's 1764 novel The Castle of Otranto, later subtitled A Gothic Story. Subsequent 18th-century contributors included Clara Reeve, Ann Radcliffe, William Beckford, and Matthew Gregory Lewis. The Gothic influence continued into the early 19th century, with Romantic works by poets such as Samuel Taylor Cole…

Flash fiction, prose poetry and ambiguity: The distinction between flash fiction and prose poetry on ambiguous terms. Flash fiction invites the reader to co-create the story themselves. We propose that a level of ambiguity in the flash fiction text is germane. In flash fiction, ambiguity is created through the brevity of the piece with the purposeful exclusion of exposition, for instance, in a similar manner to prose poetry. We wonder, therefore, about the overlap, if any, between notions of ambiguity in flash fiction and prose poetry? Are the mechanisms of ambiguity employed in prose poetry any different from that of flash fiction? What elements are left ambiguous, and what is purposely le…

Flash Fiction Story, an Authentic Text for Literacy Development in Spanish as a Foreign Language. Summary The present study is based on flash fiction texts as a tool for literacy. Literacy has been highlighted as one of the main ideas in the new Educational Standard of Latvia (in force since September 2020). This fact, followed by Solvita Berra’s recent research on original texts in foreign language teaching, leads to the exploration of flash fiction stories (sp. microrrelatos ) as an authentic text and a perfect tool for promoting literacy in the Spanish as a foreign language (ELE) classroom, since it blends perfectly with a variety of creative writing exercises. The flash fiction is a nar…

Divergent creativity in humans and large language models.. The recent surge of Large Language Models (LLMs) has led to claims that they are approaching a level of creativity akin to human capabilities. This idea has sparked a blend of excitement and apprehension. However, a critical piece that has been missing in this discourse is a systematic evaluation of LLMs' semantic diversity, particularly in comparison to human divergent thinking. To bridge this gap, we leverage recent advances in computational creativity to analyze semantic divergence in both state-of-the-art LLMs and a substantial dataset of 100,000 humans. These divergence-based measures index associative thinking-the ability to a…
