African-American folktales refer to the storytelling and oral history practices of enslaved African Americans from the 1700s through the 1900s and African Americans descendants. Common themes in African-American folktales include tricksters, life lessons, heartwarming tales, and slavery. African Americans created folktales that spoke about the hardships of slavery, telling stories of folk spirits who could outwit their slaveholders and defeat their enemies. These folk stories gave hope to enslaved people, suggesting that folk spirits would liberate them from slavery. Folktales have also been misused to perpetuate negative stereotypes about the African American community, from minstrel shows to academic journals. One of these figures is High John de Conqueror. He often symbolized empowerment for newly freed slaves, It was said that if they needed him, his spirit resided in a local root. Other common figures in African American folktales include Anansi, Br'er Rabbit, and Uncle Monday. Many folktales are unique to African-American culture, while African, European, and Native American tales influenced others. In the present, the impact of African American folklore is apparent in Hip-hop music, where themes like gangsters and pimps are influenced by the "badman" and "trickster" archetypes. In some contexts, folklorists employ the terms "culture keepers" or contemporary "griots" to…

Black South Carolinians are residents of the state of South Carolina who are of African American ancestry. This article examines South Carolina's history with an emphasis on the lives, status, and contributions of African Americans. Enslaved Africans first arrived in the region in 1526, and the institution of slavery remained until the end of the Civil War in 1865. Until slavery's abolition, the free black population of South Carolina never exceeded 2%. Beginning during the Reconstruction Era, African Americans were elected to political offices in large numbers, leading to South Carolina's first majority-black government. Toward the end of the 1870s however, the Democratic Party regained po…

Paths to African personhood and identity in the diasporas: the case for reburial of African enslaved ancestors. Recently, there has been confusion regarding the personality of people of African descent living in the West. This identity crisis is an issue rooted in African and Africana history. However, recent questions asked by newer generations of Africans in the diasporas warrant a re-thinking of this problem. In view of this, I set out in this essay with three objectives. First, I demonstrate that the personhood and identity of the descendants of African slaves have been compromised by the process of the enslavement of their ancestors. I argue that the present identity crisis in the dias…

Descriptions of the Reading History Sideways Method (the Comparative Method) by Scholars of the 1700s, 1800s, and 1900s. In the 1700s, 1800s, and 1900s, scholars turned to the experiences and institutions of contemporary societies they judged as less developed as proxies for Western Europe’s past. Early scholars referred to this practice as the comparative method, while I label it reading history sideways. In this paper, I document several early scholars’ descriptions and promotion of this practice. Early French scholars who read history sideways, include Montesquieu, Turgot, Auguste Comte, and Frederick Le Play. Across the channel, Scottish scholars, such as Adam Ferguson and John Millar,…

African American genealogy is a field of genealogy pertaining specifically to the African American population of the United States. African American genealogists who document the families, family histories, and lineages of African Americans are faced with unique challenges owing to the slave practices of the Antebellum South and North. These challenges rise from a range of events, including name changes following the American Civil War, the act of separating families for sale as slaves, lack of issued birth or death records for slaves, etc. The development of a genogram – a structured version of a pedigree chart or family tree – serves as an integral part of identity development, specifical…

Black Indians are Native American people of African American heritage, or person of African American descent with strong cultural ties to Native American communities. Historically, certain Native American tribes have had close relations with African Americans, especially in regions where slavery was prevalent or where free people of color have historically resided. Members of the Five Civilized Tribes (Cherokee, Chickasaw, Choctaw, Muscogee and Seminole) participated in holding enslaved African Americans in the Southeast and some enslaved or formerly enslaved people migrated with them to the West on the Trail of Tears in 1830 and later during the period of Indian Removal. Black ancestry is…

Soul food is the cuisine of Black Americans. Originating in the American South from the cuisines of enslaved Africans transported from Africa through the Atlantic slave trade, soul food is closely associated with the cuisine of the Southern United States. The expression "soul food" originated in the mid-1960s when "soul" was a common word used to describe Black American culture. Soul food uses cooking techniques and ingredients from West African, Central African, Western European, and Indigenous cuisine of the Americas. According to soul food historian Adrian Miller, soul food exhibits some influences from West African cuisine such as the use of greens mixed together with meat and the fryin…

Oral history is the collection and study of historical information from people, families, important events, or everyday life by using audiotapes, videotapes, or transcriptions of planned interviews. The interviews are conducted with people who participated in or observed past events and whose memories and perceptions of these are to be preserved as an aural record for future generations. Oral history strives to obtain information from different perspectives and most of these cannot be found in written sources. Oral history also refers to information gathered in that manner and to a written work (published or unpublished) based on such data, which is often preserved in archives and large lib…
