Sputnik 2 (Russian pronunciation: [ˈsputnʲɪk], Russian: Спутник-2, Satellite 2), or Prosteyshiy Sputnik 2 (PS-2, Russian: Простейший Спутник 2, Simplest Satellite 2), launched on 3 November 1957, was the second spacecraft launched into Earth orbit, and the first to carry an animal into orbit, a Soviet space dog named Laika. Launched by the Soviet Union on second and final flight of the Sputnik PS (derived from the R-7 intercontinental ballistic missile), Sputnik 2 was a 4-metre-high (13 ft) cone-shaped capsule with a base diameter of 2 metres (6.6 ft) that weighed around 500 kilograms (1,100 lb), though it was not designed to separate from the rocket core that brought it to orbit, bringing…

Laika ( LY-kə; Russian: Лайка, IPA: [ˈlajkə]; c. 1954 – 3 November 1957) was a Soviet space dog who was one of the first animals in space and the first to orbit the Earth. A stray mongrel from the streets of Moscow, she flew aboard the Sputnik 2 spacecraft, launched into low orbit on 3 November 1957. As the technology to re-enter the atmosphere had not yet been developed, Laika's survival was never expected. She died by overheating hours into the flight, on the craft's fourth orbit. Little was known about the effects of spaceflight on living creatures at the time of Laika's mission, and animal flights were viewed by engineers as a necessary precursor to human missions. The experiment, which…

Animal-assisted resilience in space exploration: a human factors approach to astronaut behavioral health.. Space science has been developed through past and current missions of the International Space Station (ISS) and Artemis (I and II) in low Earth orbit and on the lunar surface. Numerous missions have used animals on test flights to better understand the physiological dangers of space flight for humans. A contemporary focus of space exploration is long-duration crewed travel to establish a Moon station and reach Mars. The astrotechnology of the human-less spaceflights (USA, Russia, ESA, UAE, China, and India) launched in 1965 (Mariner 4), has advanced enough to support the progressive co…

Case Report: Successful application of modified laparoscopic assisted percutaneous gastropexy in a dog using two 6-mm portal sites.. Gastric dilatation and volvulus (GDV) is a life-threatening disease in dogs and has a high rate of recurrence without gastropexy. However, prophylactic gastropexy effectively reduces the incidence of GDV. In a 5-year-old female Russo-European Laika, who had a high risk of GDV due to being purebred and deep-chested, and a positive family history, prophylactic gastropexy-utilizing two 6-mm ports and barbed sutures-was performed using the modified laparoscopic-assisted percutaneous gastropexy (mLAPG) technique, without open celiotomy and intracorporeal suturing.…
