Name use by companion parrots.. Humans organize social interactions in part by referring to others using proper names (hereafter "names"). Names might also facilitate the complex social lives of animals. Several animal species produce name-like signature sounds in nature and can vocally target interaction partners, but researchers hesitate to equate these sounds with the human linguistic concept of a name. A more direct way to ask if diverse species can learn names and use them appropriately is with animals that learn human words and phrases. Accordingly, we used survey data to determine whether parrots that live with humans regularly learn names and can potentially use them as individual v…

Artificial Intelligence for the Diagnosis of Respiratory Diseases in Dogs and Cats: A Systematic Review.. Respiratory diseases represent a leading cause of veterinary consultations in dogs and cats, yet their detection remains challenging due to clinical variability and subjective interpretation of traditional diagnostic methods. In recent years, artificial intelligence (AI) has emerged as a promising tool to augment veterinary diagnostics through automated analysis of imaging and physiological data. This systematic review synthesizes and critically evaluates 24 studies published from 2019 onward that explore AI applications to support the detection of respiratory diseases in dogs and cats,…

Dogs tuned to conspecific vocalizations: behavioral evidence for a voice processing preference.. In many species, conspecific vocalizations are processed preferentially over other sounds. However, it is unknown whether this reflects sensitivity to voiceness (acoustic relevance), conspecificity (biological relevance), or socially significant species' vocalizations (social relevance). Dogs provide a unique model to disentangle biological, social, and acoustic relevance on mammalian voice perception, as both conspecific and human vocalizations are highly relevant for them. Previous behavioral research relied on highly salient distress calls, potentially masking finer perceptual differences. He…

The cat (Felis catus), also called domestic cat and house cat, is a small domesticated carnivorous mammal. It is a member of Felidae, the family of mammals in the order Carnivora also colloquially referred to as cats. An obligate carnivore requiring a predominantly meat-based diet, it has retractable claws adapted to killing small prey species such as mice and rats. It has a strong, flexible body, quick reflexes, and sharp teeth, and its night vision and sense of smell are well developed. It is a social species, but a solitary hunter and a crepuscular predator. Cat communication includes meowing, purring, trilling, hissing, growling, grunting, body language, and scent marking. It can hear s…

Clinical manifestations of Florida spot keratopathy in dogs and cats: One hundred cases (2021–2024). Abstract Purpose This study describes the ocular findings in dogs and cats diagnosed with Florida spot keratopathy (FSK) at a single institution. Methods Affected animals underwent a single comprehensive ophthalmic examination, with no follow‐ups conducted. Data on patient demographics and clinical findings were collected and analyzed. Results Based on the presence of round, white, fluorescein negative anterior stromal lesions, FSK was diagnosed in 84 dogs and 16 cats, with mean ± SD ages of 6.5 ± 3.7 and 5.9 ± 4.6 years, respectively. FSK was the presenting complaint in 18% of dogs and 12.5…
