The New Forest is one of the largest remaining tracts of unenclosed pasture land, heathland and forest in Southern England, covering southwest Hampshire and southeast Wiltshire. It was proclaimed a royal forest by William the Conqueror, featuring in Domesday Book. It is the home of the New Forest Commoners, whose ancient rights of common pasture are still recognised and exercised, enforced by official verderers and agisters. In the 18th century, the New Forest became a source of timber for the Royal Navy. It remains a habitat for many rare birds and mammals. The boundaries of the forest have varied over time and depend on the purpose of delimiting them. "New Forest District" is a local gove…

The animals of New Zealand, part of its biota, have an unusual history because, before the arrival of humans less than 900 years ago, the country was mostly free of mammals, except those that could swim there (seals, sea lions, and, off-shore, whales and dolphins) or fly there (bats). However, as recently as the Miocene, it was home to the terrestrial Saint Bathans mammal, implying that mammals had been present since the island had broken away from other landmasses. The absence of mammals meant that all of the ecological niches occupied by mammals elsewhere were occupied instead by either insects or birds, leading to an unusually large number of flightless birds, including the kiwi, the wek…

The Southwest Amazon moist forests (NT0166) is an ecoregion located in the Upper Amazon basin. The forest is characterized by a relatively flat landscape with alluvial plains dissected by undulating hills or high terraces. The biota of the southwest Amazon moist forest is very rich because of these dramatic edaphic and topographical variations at both the local and regional levels. This ecoregion has the highest number of both mammals and birds recorded for the Amazonian biogeographic realm: 257 with 11 endemic species for mammals and 782 and 17 endemics for birds. The inaccessibility of this region, along with few roads, has kept most of the habitat intact. Also, there are a number of prot…

The Influence of Zoo Habitat Settings on the Species Diversity and Assemblage of Free-Ranging Animals.. Zoos worldwide use natural man-made landscapes to enhance visitor experiences while focusing on exhibited animals. These landscapes also attract free-ranging animals. However, the presence of free-ranging animals in zoos has not been thoroughly documented, necessitating further exploration. This study aimed to identify free-ranging mammals and birds in Zoo Melaka, one of Malaysia's oldest zoos with mature natural landscapes and to examine factors influencing their distribution. Point-count observations and cage-trapping were conducted across five zones, recording 11 mammals and 40 bird sp…

Can Artificial Tree Cavities Provide Population Support to Cavity-Dependent Non-Flying Mammals?. Anthropogenic disturbances to forests have reduced densities of tree cavities and potentially led to declines in the abundance of cavity-dependent mammals. Artificial cavities (nest boxes, carved and drilled cavities) may be used to restore habitat quality that may otherwise take many decades to recover naturally. We investigated whether artificial cavities could support populations of two species of Australian cavity-dependent mammals, the brush-tailed phascogale ( Phascogale tapoatafa , 200 g) and the inland sugar glider ( Petaurus notatus , 110 g). This is the first detailed study of non-flyi…
