The term punch refers to a wide assortment of drinks, both alcoholic and non-alcoholic, generally containing fruits or fruit juice. The drink was introduced from the Indian subcontinent to England by employees of the East India Company in the late 17th century. Punch is usually served at parties in large, wide bowls, known as punch bowls. In the United States, federal regulations provide the word "punch" to describe commercial beverage products that do not contain fruit or fruit juice. The term is used to label artificially flavored beverages, with or without natural flavorings, which do not contain fruit juice or concentrate in significant proportions. Thus a product labeled as "fruit punc…

Liquid Chromatographic Determination of Methyl Anthranilate in Artificially Flavored Nonalcoholic Beverages. Abstract A liquid chromatographic method was developed that provides a simple and rapid means of determining methyl anthranilate (MA) in carbonated and noncarbonated, artificial grape-flavored, nonalcoholic beverages. The proposed procedure, which was applied to 12 different products, uses a Nova-Pak C18 column, a mobile phase containing acetonitrile–0.025M KH2PO4 (40 + 60), pH 3.00, and UV detection at 220 nm. Assay values ranged from 0.35 to 16.6 Μg MA/mL. The intralaboratory precision (relative standard deviation) for the products ranged from 0.51 to 2.23% (n = 5), and recoveries…

A cocktail is a mixed drink typically made with a distilled liquor (such as arrack, brandy, cachaça, gin, rum, tequila, vodka, or whiskey) as its base ingredient that is then mixed with other ingredients or garnishments. Sweetened liqueurs, wine, or beer may also serve as the base or be added. If beer is one of the ingredients, the drink is called a beer cocktail. Cocktails often also contain various types of juice, fruit, honey, milk or cream, spices, or other flavorings. Cocktails may vary in their ingredients from bartender to bartender, and from region to region. Two creations may have the same name but taste very different because of differences in how the drinks are prepared. This art…

Carbonated water is water containing dissolved carbon dioxide gas, either artificially injected under pressure, or occurring due to natural geological processes. Carbonation causes small bubbles to form, giving the water an effervescent quality. Common forms include sparkling natural mineral water, club soda, and commercially produced sparkling water. Club soda, sparkling mineral water, or some other sparkling waters contain added or dissolved minerals such as potassium bicarbonate, sodium bicarbonate, sodium citrate, or potassium sulfate. These occur naturally in some mineral waters but are also commonly added artificially to manufactured waters to mimic a natural flavor profile and offset…
