Eels at the Edge: Science, Status, and Conservation Concerns. Abstract.—We examined the demography of American eels Anguilla rostrata at seven Maryland sites, including six Chesapeake Bay estuaries and one bay adjacent to the Atlantic Ocean. Eels caught by baited pots in estuaries tended to be young and small with rapid growth rates. Large eels were a higher proportion of catch in the Atlantic bay, where exploitation started only recently, than in heavily fished Chesapeake estuaries. Histological examinations indicated that all eels longer than 40 cm were female, but smaller eels were female, male, or undifferentiated in roughly equal proportions. Some eels were captured i…

Proceedings of the First International Snakehead Symposium. Abstract.—Northern Snakehead Channa argus was found in ponds of Maryland in 2002 and now occupies most major rivers of Chesapeake Bay watershed. The relatively rapid expansion is owed to both natural dispersal and illegal introductions by humans. The Maryland Department of Natural Resources (MDDNR) worked with other agencies and the general public to develop tools that managed the expanding fishery for Northern Snakehead. These tools included: 1) regulation; 2) a MDDNR-to-public information network; 3) an agency-to-agency information network; 4) social media initiatives to promote recreational harvest; 5) fishing…

Hugh Jones, an Entomological Collector in Seventeenth-Century Maryland. (excerpt) In several accounts (e.g. Wilkinson, 1966a, 1966b, 1969a, 1969b) I have suggested the role of the English apothecary and naturalist James Petiver (ca. 1663-1718) in promoting the first widespread entomological collecting activities in the English seaboard colonies. In his eagerness to obtain natural history objects for his own cabinet, Petiver furnished collecting equipment and directions, as well as frequent "reminders" of his needs, to overseas travelers, emigrating colonists, and settled residents. He built up a considerable correspondence with persons in the American colonies who sent him zoological and bo…

Nanobubble-enabled foam fractionation to remove freshwater microalgae and microcystin.. Climate change and water pollution intensify algal blooms in natural lakes and reservoirs, leading to significant water quality challenges. Effectively removing excessive microalgae and algal toxins or micropollutants is essential for improving water quality, preserving aesthetic value, and protecting human health. This study evaluated the use of nanobubble-enabled foam fractionation for the removal of Microcystis aeruginosa and three microcystin congeners (MC-LR, MC-RR, and MC-YR). Foam was generated using air nanobubbles combined with surfactants-cetyltrimethylammonium bromide (CTAB), sodium dodecyl su…

Impact of brewer's spent grain on freshwater and marine harmful algal bloom species.. Barley straw bales are commonly used to control cyanobacterial growth in lakes, but the method is time-consuming, labor-intensive, and its effectiveness requires deployment of bales prior to bloom formation. This study investigates brewer's spent grain (BSG), a byproduct of the brewing process, as an alternative source of allelopathic chemicals shown to negatively impact toxic microalgae. Water extracts of BSG, barley straw, and Sargassum natans were tested for their ability to inhibit the growth of toxin-producing (Microcystis aeruginosa and Karenia brevis) as well as non-toxin-producing (Tetradesmus obli…
