Computational creativity (also known as artificial creativity, mechanical creativity, creative computing or creative computation) is a multidisciplinary endeavour that is located at the intersection of the fields of artificial intelligence, cognitive psychology, philosophy, and the arts (e.g., computational art as part of computational culture). Is the application of computer systems to emulate human-like creative processes, facilitating the generation of artistic and design outputs that mimic innovation and originality. The goal of computational creativity is to model, simulate or replicate creativity using a computer, to achieve one of several ends: To construct a program or computer capa…

Is there computational creativity?. Abstract Computational creativity has gained in the recent years momentum as an established interdisciplinary field, whose aim is to investigate, design and foster artificial intelligence. This article analyses whether artificial outputs can appear to as being creative and assesses thus computational creativity from the standpoint of the receiver. While taking Boden’s distinction between several forms of creativity as a starting point, I argue that creativity implies besides surprise and value an additional essential feature, namely the creative intention, not only from the standpoint of the creator but also of the receiver. Following the notion that I pr…

Co-creativity and perceptions of computational agents in co-creativity. How are computers typically perceived in co-creativity scenarios? And how does this affect how we evaluate computational creativity research systems that use cocreativity? Recent research within computational creativity considers how to attribute creativity to computational agents within co-creative scenarios. Human evaluation forms a key part of such attribution or evaluation of creative contribution. The use of human opinion to evaluate computational creativity, however, runs the risk of being distorted by conscious or subconscious bias. The case study in this paper shows people are significantly less confident at eva…

A Roadmap for Therapeutic Computational Creativity. Recent years have seen a budding interest in therapeutic applications of creative machines, spanning both autonomous systems and agents that enrich the human creative process. This paper takes a deep dive into therapeutic modalities through the lens of computational creativity and explores opportunities in this exciting emerging domain. In addition to bringing to light to how computational creativity can interface with mental health and wellness, the current paper brings attention to the potential risks and pitfalls of bringing creative machines into the therapeutic context. We hope that this work, conducted in collaboration between CC res…

Evaluating computational creativity: a standardised procedure for evaluating creative systems and its application. This thesis proposes SPECS: a Standardised Procedure for Evaluating Creative Systems. No methodology has been accepted as standard for evaluating the creativity of a system in the field of computational creativity and the multi-faceted and subjective nature of creativity generates substantial definitional issues. Evaluative practice has developed a general lack of rigour and systematicity, hindering research progress. SPECS is a standardised and systematic methodology for evaluating computational creativity. It is flexible enough to be applied to a variety of different types of…
