Daffy Duck is a cartoon character created by animators Tex Avery and Bob Clampett for Leon Schlesinger Productions. Styled as an anthropomorphic black duck, he was created for the Warners' cartoon series Looney Tunes and Merrie Melodies, in which he is usually depicted as a screwball or foil for either Bugs Bunny, Porky Pig, or Speedy Gonzales. He was one of the first of the new "screwball" characters that emerged in the late 1930s to replace traditional everyman characters who were more popular earlier in the decade, such as Mickey Mouse and Porky Pig. In The Scarlet Pumpernickel (1950), Daffy has a middle name, Dumas as the writer of a swashbuckling script, a nod to Alexandre Dumas. Also,…

Teaching Policy Analysis Through Animated Films: A Mickey Mouse Assignment?. ABSTRACT To conduct a policy analysis, students must master foundational concepts and apply them using critical and evaluative thinking. A film-based assignment allows students to practice the steps of policy analysis in a low-stakes setting that requires a limited investment of time. Ideally, the assignment is used as an initial practice exercise before engaging in applied projects later in the semester. The applied projects are enhanced because students already have used the steps of policy analysis and been given feedback in a sheltered setting. We suggest using animated films for this assignment because they fo…

The Problem with Mickey Mouse. In "Classic Literature and Animation: All Adaptations are Equal, but Some are More Equal than Others" (2007), Paul Wells states that, when “pure”, animation is “clearly the most effective and transparent translator of the original text” (p. 202). However, in counter to the praise that he awards the animated adaptation, Wells adds a condition, in that the animated adaptation can be "corrupted" by the presence of Mickey Mouse or Donald Duck, placing upon the animated adaptation a dichotomy in which there is a "pure," correct way to adapt, and a "corrupted," incorrect way. This article will address the value judgments placed upon children’s television adaptations…
