Most of the reported MOFs are crystalline compounds, but they can be amorphous, or reflect other disordered phases.
Pełniejszy materiał źródłowy / excerpt
Metal–organic frameworks (MOFs) are a class of coordination polymers consisting of metal clusters, also known as secondary building units (SBUs), coordinated to organic ligands to form one-, two-, or three-dimensional, typically porous structures. The ligands may be referred to as "struts" or "linkers", such as 1,4-benzenedicarboxylic acid (H2bdc). More formally, a metal–organic framework is a potentially porous extended structure made from metal ions and organic linkers. An extended structure is a structure whose sub-units occur in a constant ratio and are arranged in a repeating pattern. MOFs are a subclass of coordination networks, which is a coordination compound extending, through repeating entities, in one dimension, but with cross-links between two or more individual chains, loops, or spiro-links, or a coordination compound extending through repeating coordination entities in two or three dimensions. Coordination networks further belong to coordination polymers, which is a coordination compound with repeating coordination entities extending in one, two, or three dimensions. Most of the reported MOFs are crystalline compounds, but they can be amorphous, or reflect other disordered phases. In most cases for MOFs, the pores are stable during the elimination of the guest molecules (often solvents) and could be refilled with other compounds. Because of this property, MOFs ar…

Identifying phase transitions in zeolitic imidazolate frameworks: microscopic insight from molecular simulations.. Metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) feature a rich structural diversity, including crystalline, amorphous, and liquid phases of varying topologies. Their structural characterization is often performed either at the local scale (through pair distribution functions, bond angle distributions, etc. ) or, for crystalline phases, through topology analysis of the periodic framework-leaving out disordered and amorphous phases. In this work, we develop a computational methodology for the structural characterization of middle-range order in MOFs that is applicable to both crystalline and amo…

Programmable Guest-Induced 5-Phase-Transition Topological Reconstructions of Cobalt Formate Metal-Organic Frameworks.. Structural dynamics in metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) typically rely on elaborate, flexible organic linkers. Here, we challenge this paradigm by demonstrating a rare, reversible 5-phase-transition cycle in a minimalist cobalt formate MOF system. Central to this evolution is the conceptual reframing of the amorphous state (Co-Amor); rather than representing a structural dead-end, Co-Amor functions as a programmable, high-energy reactive hub that lowers reorganization barriers. We show that specific guest molecules selectively direct the reconstruction of this amorphous matr…

A Non-Equilibrium Flame Aerosol Process to Create High-Entropy MOFs.. High-entropy alloys and ceramics have demonstrated promising applications in the past decade. Ultrafast heating and cooling can kinetically trap immiscible elements into solid solutions, expanding the compositional space and optimizing the properties of high-entropy materials. However, the extreme temperatures required by these non-equilibrium methods are incompatible with metal-organic frameworks (MOFs). This work presents a flame aerosol strategy for synthesizing compositionally complex, entropically stabilized MOFs, enabling new combinations of properties previously inaccessible in this class of materials. Using the HK…

Topology Beyond Crystals : Quasicrystals, Amorphous Metals, and Disordered Interacting Phases.

Zeolitic imidazolate frameworks (ZIFs) are a class of metal–organic frameworks (MOFs) that are topologically isomorphic with zeolites. ZIFs are composed of tetrahedrally-coordinated transition metal ions (e.g. Fe, Co, Zn) connected by imidazolate linkers. Since the metal-imidazole-metal angle is similar to the 145° Si–O–Si angle in zeolites, ZIFs have zeolite-like topologies. As of 2010, 105 ZIF topologies have been reported in the literature. Due to their robust porosity, resistance to thermal changes, and chemical stability, ZIFs are being investigated for applications such as carbon dioxide capture. ZIF glasses can be synthesized by the melt-quench method, and the first melt-quenched ZIF…
