This is a list of American foods and dishes that have become nationally known. There are a few foods that predate colonization, and the European colonization of the Americas brought about the introduction of many new ingredients and cooking styles. This variety continued expanding into the 19th and 20th centuries proportional to the influx of migrants from other nations. This list is not exhaustive, nor does it cover every item consumed in the U.S., but it does include foods and dishes that are common in the U.S. (highly available and regularly consumed), or which originated there. The list is representative only. For more foods in a given category, see the main article for that category.

Pizza “Grandiosa” and Norwegian culinary traditions. When it comes to the harmful effects of globalization on Norwegian traditional values, one often draws on the example of the pizza “Grandiosa” phenomenon. Not only the daily assortment of dishes, but also traditional Christmas fare gave way to the “Grandiosa.” Experts in the field of culture and cultural heritage show much interest in this phenomenon; it is also addressed in Norwegian fiction, mostly as something ignoble. The change in Norwegian tastes that happened with this pizza is called the “revolution in eating habits.” Researchers render it impossible to find a rational explanation of this phenomenon. However, the traditional Norwe…

American chop suey is an American pasta casserole made with ground beef, macaroni and a seasoned tomato sauce, found in the cuisine of New England and other regions of the United States. Despite its name, it has only a very distant relation to the chop suey of Chinese and American Chinese cuisine. Though this comfort food is influenced by Italian-American cuisine, as well as older New England quick and practical meals like the "potato bargain" and "necessity mess", it is known as "American chop suey" both because it is a sometimes-haphazard hodgepodge of meat, vegetables and Italian seasoning…

A Review of Traditional, Time-Honoured Foods and Recipes: To Choose to Use or Not to Use.. Traditions in connection with foods do not just refer to the kinds of food consumed, but also to the place and society they originated from and the ways the items to be consumed were obtained and prepared. There is a tendency to believe that what people ate in former times was more natural, nutritionally superior and generally healthier than what we include in our diets nowadays. Although this is true for some foods, it is not correct for all foods and one needs to be critical and accept that even in the past some, dangerously unhealthy and nutritionally deficient food items and diets existed and that…
