Carnivorous plants are plants that derive some or most of their nutrients from trapping and consuming animals or protozoans, typically insects and other arthropods, and occasionally small mammals and birds. They have adapted to grow in waterlogged sunny places where the soil is thin or poor in nutrients, especially nitrogen, such as acidic bogs. They can be found on all continents except Antarctica, as well as many Pacific islands. In 1875, Charles Darwin published Insectivorous Plants, the first treatise to recognize the significance of carnivory in plants, describing years of his research. True carnivory is believed to have evolved independently at least 12 times in five different orders…

Utricularia gibba, commonly known as the humped bladderwort or floating bladderwort, is a small, mat-forming species of carnivorous aquatic bladderwort. It is found on all continents except Antarctica. U. gibba has an exceptionally small genome for a plant, despite having a typical number of genes. The sequencing of its DNA revealed only 3% repetitive DNA material.

Drosera, which is commonly known as the sundews, is one of the largest genera of carnivorous plants, with at least 194 species. These members of the family Droseraceae lure, capture, and digest insects using stalked mucilaginous glands covering their leaf surfaces. The insects are used to supplement the poor mineral nutrition of the soil in which the plants grow. Various species, which vary greatly in size and form, are native to every continent except Antarctica. Charles Darwin performed much of the early research into Drosera, engaging in a long series of experiments with Drosera rotundifolia, which were the first to confirm carnivory in plants. In an 1860 letter, Darwin wrote, "...at the…

A Review of the Effects of Freshwater Habitat Quality on Aquatic & Semi-Aquatic Turtles.. Freshwater turtles and terrapins require an aquatic habitat as part of their natural ecology. The health of these habitats-the quality of the water, which can be affected by natural phenomena as well as pollution and human alterations of the watershed's natural flow-are inextricably intertwined with the persistence of the turtle species that rely on them. However, likely because of the vast number of species, habitats, and aquatic variables involved, a comprehensive review of the relationship between freshwater turtles and their aquatic environments has yet to be conducted. Here, we break down fres…

A systematic review of how endocrine-disrupting contaminants are sampled in environmental compartments: wildlife impacts are overshadowed by environmental surveillance.. Endocrine-disrupting contaminants (EDCs) are frequently monitored in environments because of their biological impacts on wildlife and humans. We conducted a systematic review using Web of Science to identify global research trends for EDC environmental sampling. Specifically, we aim to better understand geographic variation in (1) the compartment that EDCs were sampled in the environment; (2) the types of EDC sampled; and (3) the taxa that are sampled. A total of 9140 papers were found, of which 2554 were included in our re…

The Brassicaceae then and now: advancements in the past three decades, a review.. Background and aims The Brassicaceae and many species of its various genera are currently recognized as models in various fields of biology. The impact of the major advancements in molecular phylogeny, development, genomics and related fields on the systematics of the family led to the recognition of the first phylogenetic tribal classification of the family and recognition of monophyletic genera. The present review is aimed to cover almost all advancements in the family systematics for the first time. Methods The comprehensive literature on the molecular phylogeny, development, cytology, genomics and related…

Biotechnology with carnivorous plants. Several carnivorous plant families have been a source of medicine for centuries in many parts of the world. Research into their active ingredients have revealed that they include naphthoquinones, flavonoids, phenolic acid derivatives, goodyerosides, iridoids, and phenylpropanoids. Many aspects of their industrial production have been optimized, including plant elicitation, plant genetic modification, and plant in vitro culture to limit the collect of wild material. The currently most active biotechnological developments are related directly to their carnivorous nature. These include the heterologous production of therapeutic polypeptides by carnivorous…

Ecophysiology of aquatic carnivorous plants. About 60 species of the genera Aldrovanda and Utricularia are submersed aquatic or amphibious carnivorous plants. They all are strictly rootless and take up mineral nutrients for their growth from the ambient water and captured prey through their trap-bearing shoots. These species represent a specific ecophysiological group that are dissimilar in their principal morphological and physiological features from terrestrial carnivorous plants and from rooted and nonrooted aquatic noncarnivorous plants. I review the ecology of habitats of aquatic carnivorous plants; characteristics of their growth traits, photosynthesis, and mineral nutrition; regulati…

Sponges or sea sponges are primarily marine invertebrates of the animal phylum Porifera (; meaning 'pore bearer'). They are filter feeders that are typically bound to the seabed, being sessile. Sponges are one of the most ancient members of living seabed community (macrobenthos), with many species being important reef-builders. Some sponge species inhabit freshwater. Sponges are multicellular organisms consisting of jelly-like mesohyl sandwiched between two thin layers of cells, and usually have tube-like bodies full of pores and channels that allow water to circulate through them. They have unspecialized cells that can transform into other types and that often migrate between the main cell…

Drosera rotundifolia, the round-leaved sundew, roundleaf sundew, or common sundew, is a species of carnivorous flowering plant that grows in bogs, marshes and fens. One of the most widespread sundew species, it has a circumboreal distribution, being found in almost all of Europe, all of Siberia, large parts of North America, Korea and Japan but is also found as far south as eastern China, the Philippines, and into the Southern Hemisphere in New Guinea.

Phylogenetic Relationships and Genetic Diversity of Thai Nepenthes (Nepenthaceae) Revealed by Integrative Molecular Analyses.. Accurate assessment of phylogenetic relationships is essential for understanding the evolution, taxonomy, and conservation of the carnivorous genus Nepenthes . In Thailand, species delimitation remains challenging because of extensive morphological variation and the occurrence of several closely related taxa. This study integrated genome-wide single nucleotide polymorphisms (SNPs) generated by Genotyping-by-Sequencing (GBS), chloroplast trnK intron sequences, nuclear ITS sequences, and AFLP markers to investigate phylogenetic relationships and gen…
