A fontanelle (or fontanel) (colloquially, soft spot) is an anatomical feature of the infant human skull comprising soft membranous gaps (sutures) between the cranial bones that make up the calvaria of a fetus or an infant. Fontanelles allow for stretching and deformation of the neurocranium both during birth and later as the brain expands faster than the surrounding bone can grow. Premature complete ossification of the sutures is called craniosynostosis. After infancy, the anterior fontanelle is known as the bregma.

Small-sized newborn dogs skeletal development: radiologic, morphometric, and histological findings obtained from spontaneously dead animals.. Background Very little is known about neonatal skeletal development in small-sized purebred dogs. In order to improve this knowledge, 27 spontaneously dead puppies belonging to small-sized breeds were enrolled in this study for radiologic, histological and morphometric investigations. Results The appearance of the limb secondary ossification centers and the onset of their formation were clearly observed by x rays and confirmed by histological evidences. Radiographic and anatomic measurements of limb bones length and skull length and width were positiv…

Novel contributions in canine craniometry: Anatomic and radiographic measurements in newborn puppies.. The largest differences in intraspecific head shape among the Carnivora order are to be found in dogs. Based on their skull morphotypes, dog breeds are currently classified as dolichocephalic, mesaticephalic and brachycephalic. Due to the fact that some breeds have not been yet defined, this classification is incomplete; moreover, multi-breed studies on the skull morphology of puppies have never been performed. The aim of this work was to verify (i) whether differences in the skull conformation of purebred puppies are already present within the first week of age; (ii) whether radiographic…

Thinking Wildly with Chihuahuas. In Wild Things: The Disorder of Desire (2020), Jack Halberstam claims that in the post-natural zombie economy, the pet, as opposed to cattle, for example, occupies a high position in the hierarchy of liveliness. Since the pet is also somatically present in human homes and heavily emotionally invested in by humans, it appears to be potentially productive to focus on this category in a discussion about intimacy and sexuality between human and non-human bodies. The topic is addressed with reference to depictions of eroticized women–dog relationships in Swedish cultural representations from the late nineteenth century onwards, primarily in literature but also wi…
