Pełniejszy materiał źródłowy / excerpt
A textile is any of various fibre-based materials, including fibres, yarns, filaments, threads, and different types of fabric. Originally, textiles were woven; however, weaving is not the only manufacturing method, and many other methods were later developed to form textile structures based on their intended use. Knitting and non-woven are other popular types of fabric manufacturing. In the contemporary world, textiles satisfy the material needs for versatile applications, from simple daily clothing to bulletproof jackets, spacesuits, doctor's gowns and technical applications like geotextiles. Textiles are divided into two groups: consumer textiles for domestic purposes and technical textiles. In consumer textiles, aesthetics and comfort are the most important factors, while in technical textiles, functional properties are the priority. The durability of textiles is an important property, with common cotton or blend garments (such as t-shirts) able to last twenty years or more with regular use and care. Geotextiles, industrial textiles, medical textiles, and many other areas are examples of technical textiles, whereas clothing and furnishings are examples of consumer textiles. Each component of a textile product, including fibre, yarn, fabric, processing, and finishing, affects the final product. Components may vary among various textile products as they are selected based on…

Silk is a natural protein fiber, some forms of which can be woven or knitted into textiles. The protein fiber of silk is composed mainly of fibroin (75-80%) and a smaller coating of sericin (20-25%). It is most commonly produced from the cocoons of certain insect larvae. The best-known silk is obtained from the cocoons of the larvae of the mulberry silkworm Bombyx mori, which are reared in captivity (sericulture). Harvested silk is produced by numerous insects; generally, only the silk of various moth caterpillars has been used for textile manufacturing. Research into other types of silk, which differ at the molecular level, has been conducted. Silk is produced primarily by the larvae of in…

The factory system is a method of manufacturing whereby workers and manufacturing equipment are centralized in a factory, the work is supervised and structured through a division of labor, and the manufacturing process is mechanized. Because of the high capital cost of machinery and factory buildings, factories are typically privately owned by wealthy individuals or corporations who employ the operative labor. Use of machinery with the division of labor reduced the required skill-level of workers and also increased the output per worker. The factory system was first adopted by successive entrepreneurs in Britain at the beginning of the Industrial Revolution in the late eighteenth century an…

Weaving Intelligence: Thermally Drawn Multimaterial Fibers Toward AI-Enabled Smart Textiles.. The rapid evolution of smart textiles is intensifying demand for multimaterial systems that couple mechanical compliance with embedded, adaptive computational capabilities. Thermally drawn fibers have emerged as a powerful platform, enabling the co-integration of polymers, metals, semiconductors, and piezoelectric or iontronic phases into continuous multimaterial architectures with high geometric fidelity and manufacturing scalability. These hybrid fibers enable distributed sensing, energy modulation, and signal transduction, while generating high-dimensional data streams well suited for artificial…

Songket or sungkit is a tenun fabric that belongs to the brocade family of textiles of Brunei, Indonesia, and Malaysia. It is hand-woven in silk or cotton, and intricately patterned with gold or silver threads. The metallic threads stand out against the background cloth to create a shimmering effect. In the weaving process the metallic threads are inserted in between the silk or cotton weft (latitudinal) threads in a technique called supplementary weft weaving technique. Songket is often associated with the Srivijaya Empire as the origin of the songket tradition, several types of popular Songket can not be separated from locations that were once under Srivijaya rule, one of the dominant loc…

A sustainable yarn tension control technique for optimizing textile dyeing efficiency and water use.. The textile dyeing sector contributes significantly to excessive water and energy use and environmental pollution. Managing yarn tension during the rewinding process is a crucial challenge in textile dyeing, as it has a direct impact on yarn quality, resource consumption, and overall efficiency. Traditional tension control techniques ignore how tension variation affects the production of wastewater and the need for chemical treatment. Using a digital signal processor (TMS320F28335), this study introduces a novel event-driven yarn tension control method for soft winding machines that maintai…

Ionic Conductive Textiles for Wearable Technology.. Soft ionic conductors, characterized by their inherent flexibility and tissue-like ion dynamics, are ideal for intimate applications such as wearable electronics for sensing, energy harvesting, signal transmission, and bioelectronics applications. Shaping ionic conductors into fiber and textile formats (i.e., ionic conductive textiles) to replace the focus on rigid electron-based conductors heralds a transformative technology in wearable electronics and smart textiles, offering advantages that align with human-device compatibility, wearability, and sustainability demands. In this review, the category of ionic conductors, the essential char…

A craft or trade is a pastime or an occupation that requires particular skills and knowledge of skilled work. In a historical sense, particularly the Middle Ages and earlier, the term is usually applied to people occupied in small scale production of goods, or their maintenance, for example by tinkers. The traditional term craftsman is nowadays often replaced by artisan and by craftsperson. Historically, the more specialized crafts with high-value products tended to concentrate in urban centers and their practitioners formed craft guilds. Their skills required an apprenticeship. Craftsmen and craftswomen had a higher status than the unskilled urban poor. The skill required by their occupati…
