Continental collision is only known to occur on Earth..
Oryginalny claim Seekera
Continental collision is only known to occur on Earth.
Pełniejszy materiał źródłowy / excerpt
In geology, continental collision is a phenomenon of plate tectonics that occurs at convergent boundaries. Continental collision is a variation on the fundamental process of subduction, whereby the subduction zone is destroyed, mountains produced, and two continents sutured together. Continental collision is only known to occur on Earth. Continental collision is not an instantaneous event, but may take several tens of millions of years before the faulting and folding caused by collisions stops. The collision between India and Asia has been going on for about 50 million years already and shows no signs of abating. Collision between East and West Gondwana to form the East African Orogen took about 100 million years from beginning (610 Ma) to end (510 Ma). The collision between Gondwana and Laurasia to form Pangea occurred in a relatively brief interval, about 50 million years long.

Earth is the third planet from the Sun and the only astronomical object known to harbor life. This is made possible by Earth being an ocean world, the only one in the Solar System sustaining liquid surface water. Almost all of Earth's water is contained in its ocean, which covers 70.8% of Earth's crust. The remaining 29.2% of Earth's crust is dry land, which is predominantly located within Earth's land hemisphere in the form of continental landmasses. Most of Earth's land is at least somewhat humid and covered by vegetation, while large ice sheets at Earth's polar deserts retain more water than Earth's groundwater, lakes, rivers, and atmospheric water combined. Earth's crust consists of slo…

The Hadean ( hay-DEE-ən, HAY-dee-ən) is the first and oldest of the four geologic eons of Earth's history, starting with the planet's formation about 4.6 Ga (estimated 4567.30 ± 0.16 Ma set by the age of the oldest solid material in the Solar System—protoplanetary disk dust particles—found as chondrules and calcium–aluminium-rich inclusions in some meteorites about 4.567 Ga), and ending 4.031 Ga, the age of the oldest known intact rock formations on Earth as recognized by the International Commission on Stratigraphy. The interplanetary collision that created the Moon occurred early in this eon. The Hadean eon was succeeded by the Archean eon, with the Late Heavy Bombardment hypothesized to…

Effects of Plate Velocity Slowdown on Altering Continental Collision Patterns and Crustal-Lithospheric Deformation During the Collision Process. Continental collision zones are widely distributed across the earth’s surface with diverse types of tectonic processes. Even the same collision zone shows significant lateral tectonic variations along its strike. In this study, we systematically investigated how plate velocity slowdown after the closure of the ocean influences the continental collision evolution, as well as the effects of kinematic characteristics and continental rheology on varying the continental collision modes in a plate velocity slowdown model. From the comparison between the…

Gondwana ( gon-DWAHN-ə; Sanskrit: गोण्डवन, romanized: Gōṇḍavana, lit. 'forest of the Gonds', pronounced [goːɳɖɐʋɐnɐ]) was a large landmass, sometimes referred to as a supercontinent. The remnants of Gondwana make up around two-thirds of today's continental area, including South America, Africa, Antarctica, Australia, Zealandia, Arabia, and the Indian subcontinent. Gondwana was formed by the accretion of several cratons (large stable blocks of the Earth's crust), beginning c. 800 to 650 Ma with the East African Orogeny, the collision of India and Madagascar with East Africa, and culminating in c. 600 to 530 Ma with the overlapping Brasiliano and Kuunga orogenies, the collision of South Ameri…

Melting of the continental crust: Some thermal and petrological constraints on anatexis in continental collision zones and other tectonic settings. Useful constraints on the depth‐temperature range and degree of melting of lower crustal rocks have been deduced by combining the results from experimental petrology with plausible PTt paths calculated for continental collision zones. H 2 O is required to generate melts at the temperatures of crustal orogenesis. Our modeling has shown that residual free water from subsolidus dehydration reactions produces less than 0.5% granitic melt at the H 2 O‐saturated solidus. Breakdown of hydrous minerals results in fluid‐absent (dehydration)‐ melting. For…

Early Earth, also known as Proto-Earth, is loosely defined as Earth in the first billion years — or gigayear (109 y or Ga) — of its geological history, from its initial formation in the young Solar System at about 4.55 billion years ago (Gya), to the end of the Eoarchean era at approximately 3.5 Gya. On the geologic time scale, this comprises all of the Hadean eon and approximately one-third of the Archean eon, starting with the formation of the Earth about 4.6 Gya, and ended at the start of the Paleoarchean era 3.6 Gya. This period of Earth's history involved the planet's formation from the solar nebula via a process known as accretion, and transition of the Earth's atmosphere from a hydro…
