Lake Victoria is one of the African Great Lakes. With a surface area of approximately 59,947 km2 (23,146 sq mi), Lake Victoria is Africa's largest lake by area, the world's largest tropical lake, and the world's second-largest fresh water lake by surface area after Lake Superior in North America. In terms of volume, Lake Victoria is the world's ninth-largest continental lake, containing about 2,424 km3 (1.965×109 acre⋅ft) of water. Lake Victoria occupies a shallow depression in Africa. The lake has an average depth of 40 m (130 ft) and a maximum depth of 80–81 m (262–266 ft). Its catchment area covers 169,858 km2 (65,583 sq mi). The lake has a shoreline of 7,142 km (4,438 mi) when digitized…

Hydroclimatic modelling of Lake Victoria: Future Projections of Lake Levels and Surface Area using LaVIWaB Model. Large tropical lakes are highly sensitive to climate variability and anthropogenic warming, yet their future hydroclimatic responses remain insufficiently quantified. This study assesses future changes in Lake Victoria using the Lake Victoria Integrated Water Balance (LaVIWaB) model driven by bias-adjusted ISIMIP3b/CMIP6 climate projections under SSP1-2.6, SSP3-7.0, and SSP5-8.5 for 2015–2100. Ten global climate model simulations were integrated to project changes in precipitation, evaporation, inflows, outflows, lake levels, surface area, and storage dynamics. Results indicate a…

Evaluation of Habitat Suitability and Assessment of the Invasion Risk of Water Hyacinth [Eichhornia crassipes (Mart.) Solms] in Global Freshwater Ecosystems.. Aquatic ecosystems worldwide are increasingly threatened by invasive species, with water hyacinth [ Eichhornia crassipes (Mart.) Solms] being among the most destructive aquatic weeds. Despite numerous regional studies, a global assessment integrating climatic and hydrological drivers remains lacking. Here, we assessed current and future invasion risks across 55,945 freshwater lakes using the maximum entropy (MaxEnt) model. Climatic variables and key aquatic parameters, including biological oxygen demand (BOD), water…

Below are the reservoirs (artificial lakes) in the world with a surface area exceeding 500 km2 (190 mi2). Reservoirs can be formed conventionally, by damming the outlet of a canyon or valley to form a lake; the largest of this type is Ghana's Lake Volta, with a water surface of 8,500 km2 (3,300 mi2). Reservoirs can also be formed by damming the outlets of natural lakes to regulate water levels, such as ones at Uganda's Owen Falls Dam (Lake Victoria) and Russia's Irkutsk Dam (Lake Baikal); they are included here and indicated with a light blue cell background. Large reservoir area does not necessarily coincide with large volume, as reservoirs with a large area tend to be shallow, such as at…

Following are two lists of terrestrial lakes that have surface areas of more than approximately 673,000 square kilometres (1,200 mi2), ranked by area, excluding reservoirs and lagoons. The area of some lakes can vary over time, either seasonally or from year to year. This is especially true of salt lakes in arid climates. This list therefore excludes seasonal lakes such as Kati Thanda–Lake Eyre (maximum area 9,500 km2, 3,700 sq mi), Mar Chiquita Lake (Córdoba) (maximum area 6,000 km2, 2,300 sq mi), Chott el Djerid (up to 7,000 km2, 2,700 sq mi), Lake Torrens (maximum area 5,745 km2, 2,218 sq mi) and Great Salt Lake (maximum area, 1988, 8,500 km2, 3,300 sq mi). The list is divided in two: al…

This is a list of lakes in the Beni Department, Bolivia. The Beni Department lies largely within the Llanos de Moxos, a seasonally flooded tropical savanna of the upper Madeira River basin in the Bolivian Amazon. The Llanos de Moxos landscape includes forested natural levees (alturas), sparsely wooded backslopes (semialturas), and seasonally flooded interfluvial basins (bajíos), with forest islands scattered throughout. Several hundred perennial lakes occur across the region. Most of the lakes are shallow — typically less than 2 m (6.6 ft) deep, with flat bottoms. Many are distinguished by rectangular or oval outlines and a northeast–southwest orientation; approximately 700 such geometric a…

Linking geochronology and source apportionment of sediments to understand land-lake transfers in the Lake Victoria Basin.. Soil erosion is an increasing environmental problem in the Lake Victoria Basin (LVB), resulting in the transfer of sediment, nutrients and contaminants from terrestrial landscapes to aquatic ecosystems. These land-to-lake transfers have implications for soil fertility, water quality, ecosystem functioning and food security, yet the temporal evolution and catchment origins of sediment inputs remain poorly understood. This study combines Pb-210 geochronology, sediment geochemistry and geochemical source apportionment to reconstruct historical sediment delivery to the Wina…

Using GIS, remote-sensing and linear modeling to prioritize spatially explicit action against erosion and sediment transport within Lake Victoria watershed in Kenya.. Watershed degradation from human encroachment is a worldwide phenomenon and a keystone driver of erosion, transport and deposition of sediment material into downstream lakes and other water bodies. Despite global recognition of the growing scale of these linkages, comprehensive evaluation and ranking of the range of specific parameters associated catchment destruction and subsequent sediment movement, or those contributing to its mitigation, has rarely been undertaken. This study applied GIS with remote-sensing with linear mod…
