Leonardo di ser Piero da Vinci (15 April 1452 – 2 May 1519) was an Italian polymath of the High Renaissance who was active as a painter, draughtsman, engineer, scientist, theorist, sculptor, and architect. While his fame initially rested on his achievements as a painter, he has also become known for his notebooks, in which he made drawings and notes on a variety of subjects, including anatomy, astronomy, botany, cartography, painting, and palaeontology. Leonardo is widely regarded as a genius who epitomised the Renaissance humanist ideal, and his collective works contributed to the development of European art to an extent rivalled only by that of his younger contemporary Michelangelo. Born…

The Mona Lisa is a half-length portrait painting by the Italian artist Leonardo da Vinci. Considered an archetypal masterpiece of the Italian Renaissance, it has been described as "the best known, the most visited, the most written about, the most sung about, [and] the most parodied work of art in the world". The painting's novel qualities include the subject's enigmatic expression, the monumentality of the composition, the subtle modelling of forms, and the atmospheric illusionism. The painting has been traditionally considered to depict the Italian noblewoman Lisa del Giocondo. It is painted in oil on a white poplar panel. Leonardo never gave the painting to the Giocondo family. It was be…

Biomimetics or biomimicry is the replication of the models, systems, and elements of nature for the purpose of solving complex human problems. The terms "biomimetics" and "biomimicry" are derived from Ancient Greek: βίος (bios), life, and μίμησις (mīmēsis), imitation, from μιμεῖσθαι (mīmeisthai), to imitate, from μῖμος (mimos), actor. To combine the word to mean imitating life. A closely related field is bionics. Nanobiomimetics is the specialization of nanobiomimetics in the nanoscale. The Theory of Evolution is a feature of biological systems for over 3.8 billion years according to observed life appearance estimations. Theoretically evolving species with high performance using commonly fo…

LGBTQ people in science are students, professionals, hobbyists, and anyone else who is LGBTQ+ and interested in science. The sexuality of many people in science is debated by historians, largely due to the unaccepting cultures in which many of these people lived. For the most part, it is not possible to know for certain how people in the past would have labelled their sexuality or gender because many individuals lived radically different private lives outside of the accepted gender and sexual norms of their time. One such example of a historical person in science that was arguably part of the LGBTQ+ community is Leonardo da Vinci, whose sexuality was later the subject of Sigmund Freud's stu…

Co-staining microplastics with Nile Red and Rose Bengal for improved optical quantification.. Accurate assessment of microplastic (MP) contamination in environmental samples is crucial not only for understanding the scope of this growing environmental threat but also for quantifying its magnitude and enabling proper risk assessment. However, current methodologies for MP quantification often suffer from inaccuracies due to the difficulty in distinguishing plastic particles from natural organic matter, also due to incomplete digestion of natural polymers during sample treatment. Moreover, the techniques commonly employed are highly time-consuming, further limiting their routine application. T…

Leonardo Torres Quevedo (Spanish: [leoˈnaɾðo ˈtores keˈβeðo]; 28 December 1852 – 18 December 1936) was a Spanish civil engineer, mathematician, and inventor who developed numerous engineering innovations related to aerial trams, airships, catamarans, and remote control. He was also a pioneer in the fields of computing and robotics, while maintaining an active role in several scientific and cultural institutions. He held prominent positions, such as Seat N of the Real Academia Española (1920–1936) and the presidency of the Spanish Royal Academy of Sciences (1928–1934). In 1927, he became a foreign associate of the French Academy of Sciences. His first innovative design was a cableway system…
