Pełniejszy materiał źródłowy / excerpt
Jet streams are fast flowing, narrow air currents in the atmosphere. It is the physical mechanism of a teleconnection. The main terrestrial jet streams are located near the altitude of the tropopause and are westerly winds, flowing west to east around the globe. The Northern Hemisphere and the Southern Hemisphere each have a polar jet around their respective polar vortex at around 30,000 ft (5.7 mi; 9.1 km) above sea level and typically travelling at around 110 mph (180 km/h) although often considerably faster. Closer to the equator, somewhat higher and somewhat weaker, is a subtropical jet. The northern polar jet flows over the middle to northern latitudes of North America, Europe, and Asia and their intervening oceans, while the southern hemisphere polar jet mostly circles Antarctica. Jet streams may start, stop, split into two or more parts, combine into one stream, or flow in various directions including opposite to the direction of the remainder of the jet. The El Niño–Southern Oscillation affects the location of the jet streams, which in turn affects the weather over the tropical Pacific Ocean and affects the climate of much of the tropics and subtropics, and can affect weather in higher-latitude regions. The term "jet stream" is also applied to some other winds at varying levels in the atmosphere, some global (such as the higher-level polar-night jet), some local (such…

Ionization in the Upper Atmosphere at About 200 km Above Sea Level. From the skip distances of radio waves measured in temperate latitudes during 1927 and 1928 the average day ionization is calculated to be at about 200 km above sea level with a maximum electron density of 7.5×105 and 5.6×105 for a summer and winter day, respectively, which agree with the observed virtual heights from radio echo experiments and the longest wave which at normal incidence pierces through the ionized layer. The ratio 1.33 of summer to winter day electron density agrees with the ratio 1.42 calculated from ionization by the ultraviolet light of the sun. An average night ionization of 2.5×105 and 1×105 for summer…

Lake Manly was a pluvial lake in Death Valley, California. It forms occasionally in Badwater Basin after heavy rainfall, but at its maximum extent during the so-called "Blackwelder stand," ending approximately 120,000 years before present, the lake covered much of Death Valley with a surface area of 1,600 square kilometers (620 sq mi). Water levels varied through its history, and the chronology is further complicated by active tectonic processes that have modified the elevations of the various shorelines of Lake Manly; during the Blackwelder stage they reached 47–90 meters (154–295 ft) above sea level. The lake received water mainly from the Amargosa River and at various points from the Moj…
