Saturable absorption is a property of materials where the absorption of light decreases with increasing light intensity. Most materials show some saturable absorption, but often only at very high optical intensities (close to the optical damage). At sufficiently high incident light intensity, the ground state of a saturable absorber material is excited into an upper energy state at such a rate that there is insufficient time for it to decay back to the ground state before the ground state becomes depleted, causing the absorption to saturate. The key parameters for a saturable absorber are its wavelength range (where in the electromagnetic spectrum it absorbs), its dynamic response (how fast…

Enhanced nonlinear optical properties from Ti3AlC2 MAX to Ti3C2 MXene. Abstract Two-dimensional (2D) transition metal carbides have attracted considerable attention in nonlinear optics owing to their unique layered structures and optical properties. In this work, Ti 3 AlC 2 and Ti 3 C 2 obtained by selective etching of Ti 3 AlC 2 were investigated comparatively in terms of their structures, saturable absorption properties, and passively Q-switched (PQS) laser performance. Both materials exhibited pronounced saturable absorption at 0.6, 1.06, and 1.3 µm, with Ti 3 C 2 showing a higher modulation depth at all three wavelengths, and its advantage becoming more evident with increasing wavelengt…

Enhanced nonlinear optical responses of 2D MoO3-<i>x</i> nanosheets through defect engineering.. The rapid deployment of ultrashort pulsed lasers in biomedicine, spectroscopy, and micro/nanoprocessing has driven increasing demand for high-performance saturable absorbers (SAs). Despite rapid advancements, SAs remain limited by poor stability and low modulation depth. Wide-bandgap transition metal oxides with engineered oxygen vacancies have emerged as promising SA candidates, offering robust stability and tunable defect-mediated nonlinear absorption. In this work, we synthesized 2D MoO 3 (MoO 3- x ) nanosheets with tunable oxygen vacancy concentrations thro…

Photonic device combined optical microfiber coupler with saturable-absorption materials and its application in mode-locked fiber laser.. We demonstrated a mode-locked fiber laser based on a novel photonic device that combined optical microfiber coupler (OMC) and saturable absorption materials. The stable ultrafast laser was formed based on the interaction between the deposited Indium Antimonide (InSb) and the evanescent field on OMC. Different from optical microfiber (OM), OMC can directly output the mode-locked laser without additional beam splitting devices, which further improves the integrated characteristics of the fiber laser. The pulse duration of the output pulse is 405 fs at the ce…

Bromo-Substituted Phenylbenzothiazole Cyclometalating Ligands for the Development of Reverse Saturable Absorption Materials.. Transition metal complexes have seen increased use in applications in the fields of photoredox catalysis, photodynamic therapy, biological sensing, and as phosphors for organic light-emitting diodes. Interest in transition metal complexes as nonlinear optical materials has increased as a result of advances in two-photon absorption and reverse saturable absorption (RSA) characterization techniques and observed characteristics. Iridium(III) organometallic chromophores are of particular interest as transition metal absorbers due to their strong spin-orbit coupling, whic…

Recent Advances in Two-Dimensional Metallic MXenes as High-Performance Saturable Absorbers.. Passively mode-locked lasers, as essential tools for generating ultrashort pulses, have found widespread applications in industrial manufacturing, optical communications, biomedical imaging, and fundamental scientific research. Saturable absorbers serve as the key components governing the performance of such laser systems. Conventional saturable absorber materials, including semiconductor saturable absorber mirrors, carbon nanotubes, and graphene, however, suffer from inherent limitations in operational wavelength range, damage threshold, and environmental stability. In recent years, two-dimensional…

Advances and Challenges in Pulsed Lasers Based on Low-Dimensional Material Saturable Absorbers.. Low-dimensional materials (LDMs) are often favored by researchers in the ultrafast photonics field for their low optical loss, ultrafast carrier response, broadband nonlinear absorption, and easy integration with optoelectronic systems. High-performance broadband saturable absorbers (SAs) fabricated from LDMs have become core components for achieving compact and miniaturized ultrafast laser. This paper systematically reviews the laser applications of LDM SAs in the near/mid-infrared spectral region, focusing on the pulse modulation mechanisms, material systems, and device integration approaches.…

Symmetry Engineering in Heterometallic TMDC Mo(1-x)NbxSe2: A Systematic Route Toward Enhanced Nonlinear Optical Performance.. Semiconducting MoSe 2 is susceptible to photon reabsorption, while metallic NbSe 2 yields low optical damage thresholds, each limiting their nonlinear optical (NLO) performance. Combining these contrasting traits, this study demonstrates that equimolar heterometallic Mo (1-x) Nb x Se 2 , undergoes structural reconfiguration that substantially enhances NLO responses, as revealed by second harmonic generation (SHG) and nonlinear optical absorption (NOA) measurements. Pronounced SHG is observed in odd-…

Reverse Saturable Absorption Induced by Phonon‐Assisted Anti‐Stokes Processes. Abstract In materials showing reverse saturable absorption (RSA), optical transmittance decreases at intense laser irradiation. One approach to application of these materials is to protect the sensors or human eyes from laser damage. To date, research has mainly concentrated on thin films and suspensions of graphite and its nanostructure (including nanotubes, graphene, and graphene oxides), which are mainly used as an optical limiter for nanosecond laser pulses. Moreover, thin individual pieces of semiconductor usually exhibit increased transmittance due to saturable absorption when the laser energy ( E laser ) i…

Nonlinear optical trapping effect with reverse saturable absorption. Nonlinear responses of nanoparticles induce enlightening phenomena in optical tweezers. With the gradual increase in optical intensity, effects from saturable absorption (SA) and reverse SA (RSA) arise in sequence and thereby modulate the nonlinear properties of materials. In current nonlinear optical traps, however, the underlying physical mechanism is mainly confined within the SA regime because threshold values required to excite the RSA regime are extremely high. Herein, we demonstrate, both in theory and experiment, nonlinear optical tweezing within the RSA regime, proving that a fascinating composite trapping state i…
