Building friendships between Shona and Ndebele ethnic groups in Zimbabwe. Despite all the public pretences of projecting a united country, Zimbabwe is a divided country and this has made genuine peace and unity very difficult to attain. The bruised and polarised relationship between the Shona and Ndebele ethnic groups is deeply rooted in the annals of history, which makes it a protracted social conflict. The Gukurahundi campaign between 1982 and 1987 was part of a chain of catastrophic events, which have emanated from a well-established culture of violence and intolerance between Shona and Ndebele. Efforts to address this culture using a top-down approach under the auspices of the 22 Decemb…

According to the 2021 Canadian census, over 450 "ethnic or cultural origins" were self-reported by Canadians. The major panethnic groups chosen were: European (52.5 percent), North American (22.9 percent), Asian (19.3 percent), North American Indigenous (6.1 percent), African (3.8 percent), Latin, Central and South American (2.5 percent), Caribbean (2.1 percent), Oceanian (0.3 percent), and other (6 percent). Over 60 percent of Canadians reported a single origin, and 36 percent reported having multiple ethnic origins, thus the overall total is greater than 100 percent. The country's ten largest self-reported ethnic or cultural origins in 2021 were Canadian (accounting for 15.6 percent of th…

Great Zimbabwe was a city in the south-eastern hills of the modern country of Zimbabwe, near Masvingo. It was settled from around 1000 AD, and served as the capital of the Kingdom of Great Zimbabwe from the 13th century. It is the largest stone structure in precolonial Southern Africa. Major construction on the city began in the 11th century and continued until the 15th century. The city was abandoned in the 16th or 17th century. The edifices were erected by ancestors of the Shona people, who live in Zimbabwe and nearby countries. The stone city spans an area of 7.22 square kilometres (2.79 mi2). Population estimates vary. Earlier estimates suggest a peak population of around 20,000 people.…

Lack of Trust between Ethnic Groups in Post-Ethnic Conflict Societies: Cases of Zimbabwe and Bosnia-Herzegovina. This paper shows how the processes of trust-building and power-sharing are evolving in the cases of Zimbabwe and Bosnia-Herzegovina after the conflict. The paper’s focus lies on lack of trust between different ethnic groups in the post-war period in terms of building political institutions and common political identity. Zimbabwe ethnic tensions originating from the Gukurahundi (1983-1987) between the Shona and the Ndebele people spilt over to the post-ethnic conflict society. Despite having the peace agreement known as the Unity Accord of 1987 to reduce tension in Zimbabwe, power…

The following article lists sovereign states, dependent territories and some quasi-states according to their proportional ethnic population composition. Ethnic classifications vary from country to country and are therefore not comparable across countries. While some countries make classifications based on broad ancestry groups or characteristics such as skin color (e.g., the white ethnic category in the United States and some other countries), other countries use various ethnic, cultural, linguistic, or religious factors for classification. Ethnic groups may be subdivided into subgroups, which may or may not be identified as independent ethnic groups in their own right, depending on the sou…

The British diaspora in Africa is a population group broadly defined as English-speaking people of mainly (but not only) British descent who live in or were born in the African continent. The majority live in South Africa and other Southern African countries in which English is a primary language, including Zimbabwe, Namibia, Kenya, Botswana and Zambia. Their first language is usually English. The term 'British diaspora in Africa' is usually used to refer to White Africans of British ancestry - anglicised native Africans are not thought to be a part of the British diaspora.

White Zimbabweans (formerly White Rhodesians) are an ethnocultural Southern African people of European descent. Most are English-speaking descendants of British settlers; a small minority are either Afrikaans-speaking descendants of mostly Dutch-originating Afrikaners from South Africa or descendants of Greek, Irish, Portuguese, Italian, and Jewish immigrants. Following the establishment of the colony of Southern Rhodesia by Britain, White settlers began to move to the territory and slowly developed rural and urban communities. From 1923, the settlers concentrated on developing rich mineral resources and agricultural land in the area. In the aftermath of the Second World War, the number of…

The following is a list of countries and dependencies ranked by population density, sorted by inhabitants per square kilometre or square mile. The list includes sovereign states and self-governing dependent territories based upon the ISO standard ISO 3166-1. The list also includes unrecognized but de facto independent countries. The figures in the table are based on areas including internal bodies of water such as bays, lakes, reservoirs and rivers. The list does not include entities not on ISO 3166-1, except for states with limited recognition. Thus constituent countries that are not included on ISO 3166-1, and other entities not on ISO 3166-1 such as the European Union, are not included.…

Significant strain microdiversity in mother-infant dyad cohorts across ethnic groups reveals population specificity of bifidobacteria microbiota transmission.. The gut microbiota of human populations shares a core of symbiotic microbial species, some of which codiversify with hosts, and are considered a complex mixture of closely related strains. However, little is known about population-wide diversity for strain-level symbiont community in the human gut so far. Here, we focused on Bifidobacterium , a key microbial group in the early-life gut microbiota. By analyzing metataxonomic datasets of the full-length 16S rRNA gene and the Bifidobacterium -specific groEL and tuf genes from 54 mother-…

Validation of neurodevelopmental assessments for early detection of high-risk infants in Zimbabwe: protocol for the Child Development Observation study (ChiDO study).. Introduction Appropriate neurodevelopmental assessment tools are often unavailable in low- and middle-income countries (LMICs) due to lack of validation, cost and cultural-linguistic challenges. This reduces the availability of high-quality developmental evaluation, resulting in clinical gaps that impact individual child outcomes and modifiable risk detection for prevention. The objective of this study is to validate three neurodevelopmental assessment tools for early detection in low-resource settings through recruitment of…
