The French Southern and Antarctic Lands (French: Terres australes et antarctiques françaises, TAAF) is an overseas territory (French: Territoire d'outre-mer or TOM) of France. It consists of: Adélie Land (Terre Adélie), the French claim on the continent of Antarctica. Crozet Islands (Îles Crozet), a group in the southern Indian Ocean, south of Madagascar. Kerguelen Islands (Archipel des Kerguelen), a group of volcanic islands in the southern Indian Ocean, southeast of Africa and southwest of Australia. Saint Paul and Amsterdam Islands (Îles Saint Paul et Amsterdam), a group to the north of the Kerguelen Islands. Scattered Islands (Îles Éparses), a dispersed group of islands around the coast…

The southeastern gentoo penguin (Pygoscelis kerguelensis) is a species of penguin in the genus Pygoscelis. This species is endemic to the Kerguelen Islands in the southern Indian Ocean and is also believed to inhabit nearby Heard Island. Previously considered part of the gentoo penguin species (Pygoscelis papua), P. kerguelensis was formally identified and described as a distinct species in 2026 based on an integrated genomic analysis.

Recent seismicity on the Kerguelen islands. The Kerguelen archipelago, one of the largest oceanic archipelagos in the world, was built by an active hotspot interacting with a ridge between 110 and 40 million years ago; since then, the ridge has migrated over 1000~km away and the archipelago's volcanic activity has been steadily decreasing. Despite the lack of recent active tectonics and the quiescent volcanism of the Kerguelen archipelago, there have been several observations of seismic events of unknown origin in its vicinity. The only seismic instrument within 1000~km of the archipelago was installed on Kerguelen's main island in the 1980's. In this study we apply modern earthquake detect…

The Kerguelen Islands, also known as the Desolation Islands, are a group of islands in the subantarctic region. They are among the most isolated places on Earth, with the closest territory being the Heard Island and McDonald Islands territory of Australia roughly 450 kilometres (240 nautical miles) to the southeast, and the nearest permanently inhabited territory being Madagascar more than 3,300 km (1,800 nmi) away. The islands, along with Adélie Land, the Crozet Islands, Amsterdam and Saint Paul islands, and France's Scattered Islands in the Indian Ocean, are part of the French Southern and Antarctic Lands and are administered as a separate district.
