In vitro immunotoxicity of important mycotoxins detected in commercial dry dog and cat food in relation to internal exposure.. A screening of commercial dog and cat foods revealed considerable variation in metabolite profiles across feed categories, with standard feeds generally showing higher concentrations of Fusarium metabolites, phytoestrogens, and plant metabolites than specialized senior or intestinal diets. Concentrations of aflatoxin B1 (AFB1), deoxynivalenol (DON) DON, zearalenone (ZEN), ochratoxin A (OTA), fumonisin B1 + 2 (FB1 + FB2), and T-2/HT-2 toxins remained below existing guidance values and maximum limits. In vitro assays using peripheral blood mononuclear cells (PBMCs) fr…

Paris is the capital and largest city of France, with an estimated city population of 2.04 million in an area of 105.4 km2 (40.7 sq mi), as of January 2026, and a metropolitan population of 13.3 million (2023). Located on the Seine in the centre of the Île-de-France region, it is the largest metropolitan area and fourth-most populous city in the European Union (EU). Paris is nicknamed the "City of Light" mainly due to its leading role in the Age of Enlightenment. Administratively, Paris is divided into twenty arrondissements (districts), each with their own cultural identity. Haussmann's renovation of Paris, which created new boulevards, parks, and public works, gave birth to a modern city…

A Motocrotte, meaning "crudmobile", (officially Caninette) was a type of motorcycle with a powerful vacuum that had one specific purpose within urban sanitation: to suck dog poop off the Paris sidewalks. From 1982 to 2002, the city of Paris paid patrollers to operate a fleet of 100 motocrotte vehicles through the most heavily-soiled sidewalks of Paris. Every day, an estimated 20 tons of canine feces were left sitting in the city's streets. Paris faced a far more intense dog poop problem than other cities, likely due to the French population's cultural unwillingness to deal with dog feces and the immense popularity of dogs (with France described as having the highest dog ownership rate). In…

Dog Population & Dog Sheltering Trends in the United States of America. Dog management in the United States has evolved considerably over the last 40 years. This review analyzes available data from the last 30 to 40 years to identify national and local trends. In 1973, The Humane Society of the US (The HSUS) estimated that about 13.5 million animals (64 dogs and cats per 1000 people) were euthanized in the US (about 20% of the pet population) and about 25% of the dog population was still roaming the streets. Intake and euthanasia numbers (national and state level) declined rapidly in the 1970s due to a number of factors, including the implementation of shelter sterilization policies, ch…

Risk Assessment and Management of Brucella canis Introduction via Commercial Dog Imports Into France.. Canine brucellosis, caused by Brucella canis, is a likely underdiagnosed zoonotic disease that leads to reproductive failure in dogs and economic losses for kennels. Since 2020, cases in mainland France have been on the rise, with most attributed to the importation of dogs from Eastern Europe. However, the risk of introducing B. canis into mainland France through commercial dog imports from worldwide sources remains poorly characterized. To address this gap, a quantitative risk assessment was conducted using a stochastic scenario tree model incorporating the region of origin of the importe…
