Sex, head size, and male mate location behavior affect allometric scaling of the eyes in Centris pallida (Hymenoptera: Apidae) bees. Abstract Variation in eye structure and function can allow organisms to exploit novel environments or perform unique behaviors. However smaller body sizes may impose morphological constraints on eye investment, limiting adaptive behavioral performance. Males of the solitary desert bee Centris pallida (Hymenoptera: Apidae) are dimorphic in both body size and sensory mate location behaviors: large-morph males are fixed on a scent-based strategy while small-morph males generally use a sight-based strategy. Females are not known to vary categorically in mat…

Insects (from Latin insectum) are invertebrates of the class Insecta. They are the largest group within the arthropod phylum. Insects have an exoskeleton, a three-part body (head, thorax and abdomen), three pairs of jointed legs, compound eyes, and a pair of antennae. Insects are the most diverse group of animals, with more than a million described species; they represent more than half of all animal species. The insect nervous system consists of a brain and a ventral nerve cord. Insects breathe air through a system of paired openings along their sides, connected to small tubes that take air directly to the tissues. The blood therefore does not carry oxygen; it is only partly contained in v…

Color, activity period, and eye structure in four lineages of ants: pale, nocturnal species have evolved larger eyes and larger facets than their dark, diurnal congeners. The eyes of insects display an incredible diversity of adaptations to enhance vision across the gamut of light levels that they experience. One commonly studied contrast is the difference in eye structure between nocturnal and diurnal species, with nocturnal species typically having features that enhance eye sensitivity such as larger eyes, larger eye facets, and larger ocelli. In this study, we compared eye structure between workers of closely related nocturnal and diurnal above ground foraging ant species (family Formici…

Active vision of bees in a simple pattern discrimination task.. Active vision, the sensory-motor process through which animals dynamically adjust visual input to sample and prioritise relevant information via photoreceptors, eyes, head, and body movements, is well-documented across species. In small-brained animals like insects, where parallel processing may be limited, active vision for sequential acquisition of visual features might be even more important. We investigated how bumblebees use active vision to distinguish between two visual patterns: a multiplication sign and its 45°-rotated variant, a plus sign. By allowing bees to freely inspect patterns, we analysed their flight paths, in…

Living Eyes is the sixteenth studio album (fourteenth internationally) by the Bee Gees, released in 1981. It was the band's final album on RSO Records, which would be absorbed into Polydor and subsequently discontinued. The album showcased a soft rock sound that contrasted with their disco and R&B material of the mid-to-late 1970s; having become a prominent target of the popular backlash against disco, the Bee Gees were pressured to publicly disassociate from the genre. While Living Eyes did not sell well in either the UK or the US, it was a top 40 hit in the majority of territories in which it saw wide release. The album earned mixed to negative reviews from critics, and the Gibb brothers…
