Radon is a chemical element; it has symbol Rn and atomic number 86. It is a radioactive noble gas and is colorless and odorless. Of the three naturally occurring radon isotopes, only 222Rn has a sufficiently long half-life (3.825 days) for it to be released from the soil and rock where it is generated. Radon isotopes are the immediate decay products of radium isotopes. The instability of 222Rn, its most stable isotope, makes radon one of the rarest elements. Radon will be present on Earth for several billion more years despite its short half-life, because it is constantly being produced as a step in the decay chains of 238U and 232Th, both of which are abundant radioactive nuclides with hal…

Uranium (92U) is a naturally occurring radioactive element (radioelement) with no stable isotopes. It has two primordial isotopes, uranium-238 and uranium-235, that have long half-lives and are found in appreciable quantity in Earth's crust. The decay product uranium-234 is also found. Other isotopes such as uranium-233 have been produced in breeder reactors. In addition to isotopes found in nature or nuclear reactors, many isotopes with far shorter half-lives have been produced, ranging from 214U to 242U (except for 220U). The standard atomic weight of natural uranium is 238.02891(3). Natural uranium consists of three main isotopes, 238U (99.2739–99.2752% natural abundance), 235U (0.7198–0…

Astatine (85At) has 41 known isotopes, all of which are radioactive, whose mass numbers range from 188 to 229 except 189; they are accompanied by almost as many metastable excited states. The longest-lived isotope is 210At, which has a half-life of 8.1 hours, followed by the medically useful 211At, with a half-life of 7.214 hours. The longest-lived isomer is 202m1At with a half-life of just over 3 minutes. However, the longest-lived isotope existing in naturally occurring decay chains is 219At with a half-life of only 56 seconds.

The health effects of radon are harmful, and include an increased chance of lung cancer. Radon is a radioactive, colorless, odorless, tasteless noble gas, which has been studied by a number of scientific and medical bodies for its effects on health. A naturally occurring gas formed as a decay product of radium, radon is one of the densest substances that remains a gas under normal conditions, and is considered to be a health hazard due to its radioactivity. Its most stable isotope, radon-222, has a half-life of 3.8 days. Due to its high radioactivity, it has been less well studied by chemists, but a few compounds are known. Radon-222 is formed as part of the uranium series i.e., the normal…

Radon-222 (222Rn, Rn-222, historically also radium emanation) is the most stable isotope of radon, with a half-life of 3.82146 days. It is an intermediate in the decay chain of primordial uranium-238 and is the immediate decay product of radium-226. Radon-222 was first observed in 1899, and was identified as an isotope of a new element several years later. In 1957, the name radon, formerly the name of only radon-222, became the name of the element. Owing to its gaseous nature and high radioactivity, radon-222 is one of the leading causes of lung cancer.

There are 39 known isotopes of radon (86Rn), from 193Rn to 231Rn; all are radioactive. The most stable isotope is 222Rn with a half-life of 3.8215 days, which decays into 218Po. Six isotopes of radon, 217-222Rn, occur in trace quantities in nature as decay products of, respectively, 217At, 218At, 223Ra, 224Ra, 225Ra, and 226Ra. 217Rn and 221Rn are produced in rare branches in the decay chain of trace quantities of 237Np; 222Rn (and also 218Rn in a rare branch) is an intermediate step in the decay chain of 238U; 219Rn is an intermediate step in the decay chain of 235U; and 220Rn occurs in the decay chain of 232Th.

RadSed-INT: A Scenario-Aware Protocol for Radioactivity Assessment in Dynamic Beach Sediments.. Beach sediments may contain natural radionuclides, fallout-derived radionuclides, naturally occurring radioactive material (NORM) or technologically enhanced naturally occurring radioactive material (TENORM), but their radiological significance depends on sediment dynamics and exposure scenario as much as on bulk activity concentration. RadSed-INT is introduced as a tiered field-laboratory protocol for assessing radioactivity in dynamic beach sediments. The protocol links in situ gamma screening, statistically designed transects, primary/confirmatory A/B sampling, high-purity germanium (HPGe) gam…
