Catfish are a diverse group of ray-finned fish of the order Siluriformes (historically Nematognathi). Catfish are named for their prominent barbels, which resemble a cat's whiskers, though not all catfish have prominent barbels. All Siluriformes lack scales, instead possessing either smooth skin or armour-plated bodies. This order of fish are defined by features of the skull (such as maxillae modified into the barbels' bases) and swimbladder. Catfish range in size and behavior from the three largest species alive, the Mekong giant catfish from Southeast Asia, the wels catfish of Eurasia, and the piraíba of South America, to detritivorous and scavenging bottom feeders, down to the tiny ectop…

Genetic Diversity of the Endangered Mekong Giant Catfish, Striped Catfish, and Their Hybrids From Thailand. Previous genetic investigations of the Mekong giant catfish ( Pangasianodon gigas Chevey, 1913) and striped catfish ( Pangasianodon hypophthalmus Sauvage, 1878) provided discordant results. Here, we sequenced mitochondrial (mt) DNA of the cytochrome B region, and a control region, to characterize the genetic variation of P. gigas, P. hypophthalmus, and hybrids of these two species. Among the three groups, P. hypophthalmus had the greatest diversity in both regions, yet all three studied groups showed lower genetic diversity compared to the results of previous studies. The Bayesian Sky…

Factors Influencing Consumer Behavior and Purchasing Decisions Regarding Mud Crabs (<i>Scylla paramamosain</i>) in the Major Cities of Vietnam.. The mud crab ( Scylla paramamosain ), also known as the mangrove crab, thrives in shallow mangrove forests, subtidal zones, and muddy intertidal habitats. It is a highly valuable species in the mangroves and estuaries of tropical regions and is in high demand in Vietnam's coastal markets. This study provides a comprehensive analysis of the key factors influencing consumer behavior and purchasing decisions regarding mud crabs in Vietnam's three largest cities: Can Tho City, Ho Chi Minh City, and Hanoi Capital. To achieve this, the resear…

Genome-wide SNP Analyses Reveal High Gene Flow of Endemic Smallscale Croaker (<i>Boesemania microlepis</i>) in the Lower Mekong Basin.. The Smallscale Croaker, Boesemania microlepis , is a valuable fishery resource in the Mekong River basin that lacks clear biological data to understand its basic ecology and conservation management priorities. This species is common in the southernmost floodplain of the Mekong which extends from Tonlé Sap in Cambodia to the Mekong Delta in Vietnam. This floodplain is of particular biodiversity conservation concern because of the many upstream dams that restrict water flow in an ecology that relies heavily on a flood-pulse cycle. The literature r…

A chromosome-level reference genome assembly of the giant pangasius (Pangasius sanitwongsei).. The giant pangasius (Pangasius sanitwongsei) is a critically endangered freshwater species with considerable ecological and economic significance in Southeast Asia and southern China. However, the lack of a high-quality reference genome has limited studies on its genetic adaptation and conservation strategies. Here, we present a chromosome-scale genome assembly of P. sanitwongsei, generated using PacBio HiFi long-read sequencing and Hi-C chromatin conformation capture. The final assembly spans 808.85 Mb, with a contig N50 of 18.70 Mb and a scaffold N50 of 28.10 Mb, achieving a BUSCO gene completen…

A fish is an aquatic, anamniotic, gill-bearing vertebrate animal with a tough cranium to protect the brain, but lacking limbs with digits. Fish can be grouped into the more basal jawless fish and the more common jawed fish, the latter including all living cartilaginous and bony fish, as well as the extinct placoderms and acanthodians. Tetrapods are descended from fish, so in a break from the long tradition of grouping all fish into a single class (Pisces), modern phylogenetics views fish as a paraphyletic group that includes all vertebrates except tetrapods. To treat fish as a monophyletic group, one would have to classify tetrapods as a clade/subgroup of specialized fish, which would make…

Cryopreservation of Mekong Giant Catfish Sperm. Sperm or Mekong giant catfish (Pangasius gigas; formerly Pangasianodon gigas) were cryopreserved in 5 or 9% dimethyl sulfoxide (DMSO) in bicarbonate buffer (BCB) or calcium-free Hanks' balanced salt solution (C-F HBSS) at different cooling rates (-5, -12, -22 or -120 "C·min"1) and stored in liquid nitrogen for 3-4 months. Pooled ova of three female Gunther's walking catfish (Clarias macrocephalus) were inseminated with cryopreserved semen or Mekong giant catfish and fresh semen of the walking catfish (control). There was no significant difference in fertility of sperm cryopreserved in the two extenders. Best results were obtained when sperm we…

Fish vary greatly in size. The extant whale shark and basking shark exceed all other fish by a considerable margin in weight and length. The extinct Otodus megalodon exceeds all other fish, extant and extinct (excluding tetrapods), in size. Fish in the common usage are a paraphyletic group that describes aquatic vertebrates while excluding the tetrapods, four limbed vertebrates nested within the lobe-finned fish, which include all land vertebrates and their nearest extinct relatives. This list therefore excludes the various marine reptiles and mammals, such as the extinct ichthyosaur, plesiosaur and mosasaur reptiles (none of which are dinosaurs) and the extant sirenia and cetacea mammals (…

The mallard () or wild duck (Anas platyrhynchos) is a dabbling duck that breeds throughout temperate and subtropical North America, Eurasia, and North Africa. It has been introduced to New Zealand, Australia, Peru, Brazil, Uruguay, Argentina, Chile, Colombia, the Falkland Islands, and South Africa. Belonging to the subfamily Anatinae of the waterfowl family Anatidae, mallards live in wetlands, eat water plants and small animals, and are social animals preferring to congregate in groups or flocks of varying sizes. Males (drakes) have green heads, while the females (ducks) have mainly brown-speckled plumage. Both sexes have an area of white-bordered black or iridescent purple or blue feathers…
