Jack Dorsey first began to develop his early idea for the social media site Twitter in 2006 while working at early Internet tech company Odeo. After it spun off in 2007 and expanded rapidly after that, Twitter became a significant component of global society. It became a key part of politics and international relations but was also banned or blocked in some countries. Twitter went public in 2013 and continued to expand. As part of their professional routine, Spanish journalists are gradually joining the ranks of active users of social networks like Twitter. Following some on-the-fly strategy or just winging it, and fully putting into practice the idea that “one must be where the people are,” they distribute information coming from their own media, viralize information from other users/media, editorialize as they go, sum up daily life or shoot the breeze about a variety of topics. Social media in emergency management: Twitter as a tool for communicating risks to the public. One of the main challenges of emergency management lies in communicating risks to the public. Social media accounts offer an opportunity to rapidly distribute critical information and in doing so to mitigate the impact of emergencies by influencing public reactions. This article draws on theories of risk and emergency communication in order to consider the impact of Twitter as a tool for communicating risks to the public. We analyse 1…

Public Archaeology 2.0: Facilitating engagement with Twitter. Public archaeology increases public awareness of archaeological issues and their practical applications to modern social concerns. Classroom visits, hands-on activities, site tours, and other events give archaeologists the opportunity to engage the public and transfer knowledge through face-to-face interaction. However, engagement ends at the conclusion of the event, leaving the audience with an incomplete understanding of the subject. Twitter, a social media application, transcends these spatial and temporal limitations by allowing sustained multi-directional communication among archaeologists, their audience and others who neve…

Web3 is an idea for a new iteration of the World Wide Web which incorporates concepts such as decentralization, blockchain technologies, tokenomics, and privacy-enhancing technologies. The term is sometimes confused with the Semantic Web, as both have sometimes been referred to as "Web 3.0". Some technologists and journalists have contrasted it with Web 2.0, in which they say user-generated content is controlled by a small group of companies referred to as Big Tech. The term "web 3.0" as applied to blockchain technology was coined in 2014 by Ethereum co-founder Gavin Wood, and the idea gained interest in 2021 from cryptocurrency enthusiasts, large technology companies, and venture capital f…
