Building High Tatras: dilemma of form Architecture of 1960s and 1970s in the most famous Slovak mountain resort. The High Tatra Mountains are the most prominent alpine center of recreation and sport in Slovakia. The development of this site dates back to the end of the 19th century. From the architectural point of view, the beginning of the 20th century, the 1920s, the 1930s and the post-war period of the 1960s and the 1970s should be considered the most interesting periods. Ice phenomena on Lake Czarny Staw pod Rysami. Abstract Due to its inaccessibility (in winter), Lake Czarny Staw pod Rysami (Black Lake below Mount Rysy) has no series of continuous observations concerning ice phenomena. For the purpose of supplementing knowledge in this scope, ice corings were performed in the years 2010–2015. They permitted the determination of the variability of ice cover thickness on the lake’s surface. A high degree of similarity was determined in the distribution of ice cover thickness in the analysed winters (in contrast to the nearby Lake Morskie Oko). Moreover, a correlation was determined according to which the thicker the snow cover overlying the ice, the thinner…

For students studying the history of tourism, it provides a valuable perspective on how tourism evolved in the mountain resorts of central Europe and how decisions were taken at a policy level in the post…

Tourism Planning in the Slovak High Tatras. Abstract The High Tatras mountain range separates Poland and Slovakia. Planning for tourism in this mountain area was mainly undertaken between the late 1940s and the 1970s and demonstrates an exceptional level of sophistication and quality. The planning goals included: recreation and tourist travel, essentially for a domestic audience; environmental protection of high-altitude regions, and their study; and therapeutic treatment. This case study describes the planning principles behind these objectives and how these goals were achieved. Information Adapted from 'Introduction to the High Tatras and the Slovak High Tatras Case study'. In: Travis A.S…
