An audience is a group of people who participate in a show or encounter a work of art, literature (in which they are called "readers"), theatre, music (in which they are called "listeners"), video games (in which they are called "players"), or academics in any medium. Audience members participate in different ways in different kinds of art. Some events invite overt audience participation and others allow only modest clapping and criticism. Media audience studies are now a recognized part of the curriculum. Audience theory offers scholarly insight into audiences and their relationship with different forms of art. These insights help explain how audiences influence and respond to media. American journalist Jeff Jarvis said, "Give the people control of media, they will use it. The corollary: Don't give the people control of media, and you will lose. Whenever citizens can exercise control, they will." Tom Curley, President of the Associated Press, similarly said, "The users are deciding what the point of their engagement will be — what application, what device, what time, what pl…

A poetry slam is a competitive art event in which poets perform spoken word poetry before a live audience and a panel of judges. Some people draw distinction between the concepts of "poetry slam" as a competition event and "slam poetry" as a performance event and art form. There are regular poetry slam competitions all around the globe. The performances at a poetry slam are judged as much on performance as content, and poets may compete as individuals or in teams. The judging is often handled by a panel of judges, typically five, who are usually selected from the audience. Often, the highest and lowest scores for each poet in a round are dropped. The audience is encouraged to react to a poe…

The Williams sisters are two American professional tennis players: Venus Williams (born 1980), a seven-time major singles champion, and Serena Williams (born 1981), a 23-time major singles champion, both of whom were coached from an early age by their parents Richard Williams and Oracene Price. Tennis has not been open to female participation in the past. When the sport was introduced as a form of leisurely activity in the United States, “many clubs would not allow women to be members”. The Williams sisters' careers and status as successful African American athletes within a historically White sport, in spite of openly racist backlash they encountered during their careers, has been credited…
