Pełniejszy materiał źródłowy / excerpt
In the field of pharmacy, compounding (performed in a compounding pharmacy) is preparation of custom medications to fit unique prescriptions that cannot be met with mass-produced formulations. This may be done, for example, to provide medication in a form easier for a given person to ingest (e.g., liquid vs. tablet), to avoid a non-active ingredient, or to provide a particular dose tailored to a given person, referred to as "traditional" compounding. Compounding preparations of a given formulation in advance batches, as opposed to preparation for a specific person on demand, is known as "non-traditional" or "officinal" compounding, and is akin to small-scale manufacturing. Jurisdictions have varying regulations that apply to both traditional and non-traditional compounding, as well as mass-producing drug manufacturers. Hospital pharmacies typically engage in compounding medications for intravenous administration, whereas outpatient or community pharmacies typically engage in compounding medications for oral or topical administration. Because of the rising cost of compounding and drug shortages, some hospitals outsource their compounding needs, particularly of sterile-injectable medications, to large-scale compounding pharmacies.

Medication (also called medicament, medicine, pharmaceutical drug, medicinal product, medicinal drug, or simply drug) is a drug used to diagnose, cure, treat, or prevent disease. Drug therapy (pharmacotherapy) is an important part of the medical field and relies on the science of pharmacology for continual advancement and on pharmacy for appropriate management. Drugs are classified in many ways. One of the key divisions is by level of control, which distinguishes prescription drugs (those that a pharmacist dispenses only on the medical prescription) from over-the-counter drugs (those that consumers can order for themselves). Medicines may be classified by mode of action, route of administra…

A polypill or single pill combination (SPC) is a type of drug combination consisting of a single drug product in pill form (i.e., tablet or capsule) that combines multiple active pharmaceutical ingredients. The prefix "poly" means "multiple", referring to the multiplicity of distinct drugs in a given "pill". Precisely, a polypill contains at least 4 ingredients (fixed-dose combinations of 2 or 3 drugs are not polypills). A synonym is combopill. Polypills commonly target treatment or prevention of chronic conditions. Polypills may be consumed by healthy people as a preventive medicine, and/or treating actual pathophysiological condition(s), the former typically involving lower dosages than t…

Pharmacy is the science and practice of dispensing, preparing, reviewing safety and efficacy, monitoring, discovering, producing, and consulting about medications, aiming to ensure the safe, effective, and affordable use of medicines. It is an interdisciplinary science as it links health sciences, pharmaceutical sciences, and natural sciences with the humanities. The professional practice is clinically oriented, with most drugs now being manufactured by pharmaceutical industries and prescribed in the medical setting. Based on the setting, pharmacy practice is either classified as community or institutional pharmacy. Providing direct patient care is considered clinical pharmacy, mainly pract…
