Pełniejszy materiał źródłowy / excerpt
The geology of Triton encompasses the physical characteristics of the surface, internal structure, and geological history of Neptune's largest moon Triton. With a mean density of 2.061 g/cm3, Triton is roughly 15–35% water ice by mass; Triton is a differentiated body, with an icy solid crust atop a probable subsurface ocean and a rocky core. As a result, Triton's surface geology is largely driven by the dynamics of water ice and other volatiles such as nitrogen and methane. Triton's geology is vigorous, and has been and continues to be influenced by its unusual history of capture, high internal heat, and its thin but significant atmosphere. Nearly nothing was known of Triton's geology until the Voyager 2 spacecraft flew by the Neptune system in 1989, marking the first and only up-close observations of the moon as of 2024. A number of proposals have been made to follow up on Voyager 2's discoveries, such as Trident and Triton Hopper.

Voyager 2 at Neptune and Triton. Voyager 2 completed its “grand tour” of the outer solar system in 1989 by returning the first in situ observations of Neptune, its rings, and its satellites. The probe revealed that the Neptunian system is dynamic and diverse. Major discoveries include atmospheric bands and large storms on Neptune, the existence and orientation of Neptune's magnetic field, a system of four dark rings, six small satellites, and the geologically spectacular and active surface of Neptune's largest moon, Triton. The observations offer important clues to the origin and evolution of the Neptunian system and the outer solar system and raise many new questions.

Slidr Sulci is a major tectonic fault on Neptune's largest moon Triton. It crosses a wide variety of terrains on Triton, most prominently the cantaloupe terrain, an unusually textured region resembling the skin of a North American cantaloupe. Branching from a junction with Boynne Sulci, Slidr Sulci consists of a band of parallel ridges for much of its length. The fault is named after the River Sliðr of Norse mythology, whose waters in Hel are filled with swords. The name Slidr Sulci was officially approved by the International Astronomical Union (IAU) in 1991. As with all of Triton's surface features, Slidr Sulci was first observed by the Voyager 2 spacecraft on its flyby of Neptune and Tri…

Voyager 2 is a space probe launched by NASA on August 20, 1977, as a part of the Voyager program. It was launched on a trajectory towards the gas giants (Jupiter and Saturn) and enabled further encounters with the ice giants (Uranus and Neptune). The only spacecraft to have visited either of the ice giant planets, it was the third of five spacecraft to achieve Solar escape velocity, which allowed it to leave the Solar System. Launched 16 days before its twin Voyager 1, the primary mission of the spacecraft was to study the outer planets and its extended mission is to study interstellar space beyond the Sun's heliosphere. Voyager 2 successfully fulfilled its primary mission of visiting the J…

Triton is the largest natural satellite of the planet Neptune. It is the only moon of Neptune massive enough to be rounded under its own gravity and hosts a thin, hazy atmosphere. Triton orbits Neptune in a retrograde orbit—revolving in the opposite direction to the parent planet's rotation—the only large moon in the Solar System to do so. Triton is thought to have once been a dwarf planet from the Kuiper belt, captured into Neptune's orbit by the latter's gravity. At 2,706.8 kilometers (1,681.9 mi) in diameter, Triton is the seventh-largest moon in the Solar System, the second-largest planetary moon in relation to its primary (after Earth's Moon), and larger than all of the known dwarf pla…

Voyager 2 Radio Occultation of Triton revisited using modernized analysis tools. In 1989 the Voyager 2 spacecraft performed a flyby of the Neptune system. In particular, a radio occultation of Triton’s ionosphere was performed on 25 August 1989. Results from this occultation experiment were published in Science by Tyler et al., and the atmospheric profiles of Triton were estimated via analysis of the real-time tracking and monitoring systems data at time resolutions of about 1 second. In recent years, thanks to an increase in the computational power of microprocessors and an expansion in their fields of application, there has been a surge in the development of optimal estimators for st…

Triton, the largest moon of Neptune, is hypothesized to have been captured from heliocentric orbit early in the Solar System's history. Triton is unusual as it is the only known large moon with a retrograde, highly inclined orbit; that is, Triton orbits in the opposite direction Neptune rotates, and its orbit is not aligned with Neptune's equatorial plane. This conflicts with the conventional theory of moon formation, where large moons tend to form from discs of debris and thus orbit prograde. As a result, astronomers have proposed various hypotheses on how Triton acquired its unusual orbital configuration, with capture hypotheses currently being the tentative consensus. The capture of Trit…

The atmosphere of Triton is the layer of gases surrounding Triton. Like the atmospheres of Titan and Pluto, Triton's atmosphere is composed more than 95% of nitrogen, with smaller amounts of methane and carbon monoxide. It hosts a layer of organic haze extending up to 30 kilometers above its surface and a deck of thin bright clouds at about 4 kilometers in altitude. Due to Triton's low gravity, its atmosphere is loosely bound, extending over 800 kilometers from its surface. Triton, along with Saturn's moon Titan, is one of only two moons in the Solar System known to have significant, global atmospheres. The surface pressure is only 14 microbars (1.4 Pa or 0.0105mmHg), 1⁄70000 of the surface…

Long-Term Evolution of the Saturnian System.. Here we present the current state of knowledge on the long-term evolution of Saturn's moon system due to tides within Saturn. First we provide some background on tidal evolution, orbital resonances and satellite tides. Then we address in detail some of the present and past orbital resonances between Saturn's moons (including the Enceladus-Dione and Titan-Hyperion resonances) and what they can tell us about the evolution of the system. We also present the current state of knowledge on the spin-axis dynamics of Saturn: we discuss arguments for a (past or current) secular resonance of Saturn's spin precession with planetary orbits, and explain the…

Characterization of the Surfaces and Near-Surface Atmospheres of Ganymede, Europa and Callisto by JUICE.. We present the state of the art on the study of surfaces and tenuous atmospheres of the icy Galilean satellites Ganymede, Europa and Callisto, from past and ongoing space exploration conducted with several spacecraft to recent telescopic observations, and we show how the ESA JUICE mission plans to explore these surfaces and atmospheres in detail with its scientific payload. The surface geology of the moons is the main evidence of their evolution and reflects the internal heating provided by tidal interactions. Surface composition is the result of endogenous and exogenous processes, with…

Neptune has been directly explored by one space probe, Voyager 2, in 1989. As of 2026, there are no confirmed future missions to visit the Neptunian system. NASA, ESA, CNSA and independent academic groups have proposed future scientific missions to visit Neptune. Some mission plans are still active, while others have been abandoned or put on hold. Since the mid-1990s, Neptune has been studied from afar with telescopes, including the Hubble Space Telescope and the ground-based Keck telescope using adaptive optics.

Ice giant system exploration in the 2020s: an introduction.. The international planetary science community met in London in January 2020, united in the goal of realizing the first dedicated robotic mission to the distant ice giants, Uranus and Neptune, as the only major class of solar system planet yet to be comprehensively explored. Ice-giant-sized worlds appear to be a common outcome of the planet formation process, and pose unique and extreme tests to our understanding of exotic water-rich planetary interiors, dynamic and frigid atmospheres, complex magnetospheric configurations, geologically-rich icy satellites (both natural and captured), and delicate planetary rings. This article intr…
