The history of computing extends beyond the history of computing hardware and modern computing technology including earlier methods that relied on pen and paper or chalk and slate, with or without the aid of tables.

The history of tablet computers and the associated special operating software is an example of pen computing technology, and thus the development of tablets has deep historical roots. The first patent for a system that recognized handwritten characters by analyzing the handwriting motion was granted in 1914. The first publicly demonstrated system using a tablet and handwriting recognition instead of a keyboard for working with a modern digital computer dates to 1956.

Cryptanalysis (from Greek kryptós 'hidden' and analýein 'to analyze') refers to the process of analyzing information systems in order to understand hidden aspects of the systems. Cryptanalysis is used to breach cryptographic security systems and gain access to the contents of encrypted messages, even if the cryptographic key is unknown. In addition to mathematical analysis of cryptographic algorithms, cryptanalysis includes the study of side-channel attacks that do not target weaknesses in the cryptographic algorithms themselves, but instead exploit weaknesses in their implementation. Even though the goal has been the same, the methods and techniques of cryptanalysis have changed drasticall…

"The Computer as a Sophisticated Disguise of the Devil" : Supposed Technophobia in German-Speaking Protestant Churches towards Electronic Data Processing (EDP).. Christian churches are sometimes perceived as being hostile towards technology due to the supposed incompatibility of the cold, rational world of technology and the warm, humane organization of the church. Even when electronic data processing (EDP) was introduced in German-speaking Protestant churches in Western Europe, a lack of acceptance of technology was repeatedly problematized by church digitization pioneers as a central hurdle in church digitization processes. According to them, the "synchronization" (David Gugerli) of churc…

Computing Hardware. Digital computers are built from hardware of great simplicity. First, they are built from devices with two states: on or off, one or zero, high voltage or low voltage, or logical TRUE or FALSE. Second, the devices are connected with extremely fine connections, currently on the order of size of a large virus. Their utility, value, and perceived extreme complexity lie in the software controlling them. Different devices have been used to build computers: relays, vacuum tubes, transistors, and integrated circuits. Theoretically, all can run the same software, only slower or faster. More exotic technologies have not proved commercially viable. Digital computer hardware has in…

Computing Hardware. Chapter 2 presents a kind of computation currently unfamiliar to most, the analog computer. Fifty years ago, they were considered viable competitors to the newer digital computer. Analog computers compute by the use of physical analogs, using, for example, voltages, currents, or shaft positions to represent numbers. They compute using the device properties, not logic. Examples include the balance, a simple device known for millennia; the “Antikythera mechanism,” a complex astronomical calculator from the first century BC; the slide rule; the US Navy’s Mark I fire control computer used for much of the 20th century to aim naval gunfire; and electronic analog computers buil…
