ANU Radiocarbon Date List XI: Radiocarbon Dates from Lakes Barrine and Eacham, Atherton Tableland, North Queensland, Australia. Lakes Barrine and Eacham and their small, discrete, forested catchments are sites of intensive sedimentological, palynological and ecological research. The studies that we present here concentrate on integrating population statistics of tree species of the living forest with their histories, as documented by fine-resolution pollen analysis (Green and Dolman 1988). Most of the work has been undertaken at Lake Barrine, where the last 5 ka is recorded in laminated sediments. Additional information about these sites and about aspects of the project is contained in Chen…

Plant nutrient status of soils of the Atherton Tableland, North Queensland. The principal soils of the Atherton Tableland are derived from basalt, granite, acid volcanic, and metamorphic rocks. They are predominantly krasnozems with some xanthozems and krasnozem variants. They were assessed for plant nutrient status by means of glasshouse experiments using the legumes Desmodium intortum and Trifolium repens as test plants. The main nutrient responses were, in decreasing order of magnitude, to phosphorus, molybdenum, and potassium. There were also small responses on some soils to sulphur, liming, and, under liming, to zinc. For most of the soils growth was negligible in the absence of added…

Late Cenozoic pollen spectra from the Atherton Tableland, north-eastern Australia. Pollen analysis of samples from a short sediment sequence on the Atherton Tableland, of Late Tertiary or Early Pleistocene age, provides the first evidence of existing vegetation within the region prior to about 100,000 years B.P. Comparison of fossil samples with modern pollen spectra suggests the presence of a submontane rainforest existing under a temperature regime some 3°C cooler than present. A number of ancient taxa including Nothofagus and several conifers, present in the fossil samples, no longer exists within the region. An attempt is made to explain their decline within an area that harbours a grea…

Weed control in potatoes on the Atherton Tableland, Queensland. Three experiments were conducted in winter and summer over two years testing chemicals and cultivation for weed control in potatoes on the Atherton Tableland, Queensland. In all trials cultivation effectively prevented weeds from causing yield reductions. Under dry conditions, cultivation was more effective than chemicals in controlling weeds. Under wet conditions chemicals controlled weeds better than cultivation. Under cool wet conditions linuron used at either 2.24 kg a.i. ha pre-emergence or at 1 .12 kg a.i. ha-1 at first emergence of the potatoes controlled weeds very well without reducing tuber yield. Under hot wet condit…

The Daintree Rainforest, also known as the Daintree, is a region on the northeastern coast of Queensland, Australia, about 105 km (65 mi), by road, north of the city of Cairns. Whilst the terms "Daintree Rainforest" and "the Daintree" are not officially defined, it is generally accepted and understood that they refer to the area from the Daintree River north to Cooktown, and from the coastline west to the Great Dividing Range. The popular tourist destination of Mossman Gorge, some 30 km (19 mi) south of the Daintree River, is often (and again, unofficially) included in the definition. At around 1,200 square kilometres (460 sq mi), the Daintree is a part of the largest contiguous area of tro…

The Queensland tropical rain forests ecoregion (WWF ID: AA0117) covers a portion of the coast of Queensland in northeastern Australia and belongs to the Australasian realm. The forest contains the world's best living record of the major stages in the evolutionary history of the world's land plants, including most of the world's relict species of plants from the ancient supercontinent of Gondwana. The history of the evolution of marsupials and songbirds is also well represented.

Far North Queensland (FNQ) is the northernmost part of the Australian state of Queensland (QLD). Its largest city is Cairns and it is dominated geographically by Cape York Peninsula, which stretches north to the Torres Strait, and west to the Gulf Country. The waters of Torres Strait include the only international border in the area contiguous with the Australian mainland, between Australia and Papua New Guinea. The region is home to three World Heritage Sites, the Great Barrier Reef, the Wet Tropics of Queensland and Riversleigh, Australia's largest fossil mammal site. Far North Queensland lays claim to over 70 national parks, including Mount Bartle Frere; with a peak of 1,622 metres (5,32…
