We're filmmakers working on an AI doc that features developments in the self-driving car industry. Ask us anything!. Hello Reddit! We are filmmakers working with NOVA PBS on a film about artificial intelligence entitled NOVA Wonders: Can We Build a Brain. In the course of making the show, we spent a lot of time reporting on self-driving cars. As we’re sure you are aware, there is a lot of hype around autonomous vehicles these days. And, as this week’s accident in Phoenix shows, there is still a ways to go. If you’re interested in when you might see one of these babies in your driveway, the economic/social implications of self-driving cars, or just have general questions about the state of A…

Cruise LLC was an American self-driving car company that became a subsidiary of General Motors, headquartered in San Francisco, California. Founded in 2013 by Kyle Vogt and Dan Kan, Cruise tested and developed autonomous car technology. The company was acquired by General Motors in 2016, and operated as a largely autonomous subsidiary, focusing on producing a fleet of driverless taxis. Following a series of incidents, it suspended operations in October 2023, and Kyle Vogt resigned as CEO in November 2023. The company began returning its vehicles to public roads in May 2024. In December 2024, GM stopped funding Cruise. Work on autonomous vehicles was to be incorporated into development of ad…

A self-driving car, also known as an autonomous car, driverless car, robotic car, or robo-car, is a car that is capable of operating with reduced or no human input. They are sometimes called robotaxis, though this term refers specifically to self-driving cars operated for a ridesharing company. As of 2026, the term "self-driving" lacks an agreed standard definition and is also subject to commercial advertising and branding considerations. In 2020, Waymo was the first to offer rides in driverless taxis in the operational design domain (ODD) of limited geographic areas, but as of late 2025, no system has achieved full autonomy in all domains - sometimes referred to as "Level 5" on a scale of…

Self-driving cars were anticipated by experiments in radio control during the 1920s, and the development of advanced driver assistance (ADAS) after WWII. Trials of self-driving vehicles began in the 1950s with the first semi-autonomous car developed in 1977 by Japan's Tsukuba Mechanical Engineering Laboratory. In the United States, Carnegie Mellon University's Navlab began semi-autonomous vehicle projects in 1984, funded by the Defense Advanced Research Projects Agency (DARPA). In Europe, similar projects were led by Mercedes-Benz and the University of the Bundeswehr Munich's EUREKA Prometheus Project, beginning in 1987. The United States allocated US$650 million in 1991 for research on the…
