The relationship between urinalysis abnormalities, soiling behavior, and cognitive decline in aging dogs.. Background In elderly people, dementia and urinary tract dysfunction often exacerbate one another. Aging dogs also suffer cognitive decline but the relationship between cognitive decline, soiling behaviors, and urinalysis abnormalities has not been explored. Hypothesis/objectives Soiling behavior is associated with urinalysis abnormalities and cognitive performance in aging dogs. Animals Eighty-four client-owned dogs enrolled in a longitudinal cohort study of aging. Methods In this prospective observational study, dogs were evaluated biannually with free-catch urinalysis, owner-complet…

Neutering, from the Latin neuter ('of neither sex'), is the removal of an animal's reproductive organ, either all of it or a considerably large part. Humane societies, animal shelters, and rescue groups urge pet owners to have their pets neut…

Use of soy isoflavones for weight management in spayed/neutered dogs. Estrogen plays an important role in regulating energy and fat metabolism, and maintaining normal body composition in both female and male animals. Both soy isoflavones and exogenous estrogen have been shown to significantly reduce body fat accumulation in ovariectomized rodents, indicating soy isoflavones may act as estrogen agonist in regulating energy and fat metabolism, and body composition. Obesity has been associated with many chronic diseases in dogs, and spaying/neutering is among the risk factors for overweight and obesity in dogs. There is no literature concerning the effects of soy isoflavones on weight gain in…
