In celestial mechanics, the Lagrange points (), also called the Lagrangian points or libration points, are points of equilibrium for small-mass objects under the gravitational influence of two massive orbiting bodies. Mathematically, this involves the solution of the restricted three-body problem. Normally, the two massive bodies exert an unbalanced gravitational force at a point, altering the orbit of any other celestial body at that point. At the Lagrange points, the gravitational forces of the two large bodies and the centrifugal pseudo-force balance each other. This can make Lagrange points an excellent location for satellites, as orbit corrections, and hence fuel requirements, needed t…

The Kordylewski clouds, sometimes called the lunar libration clouds, are sparse clouds of cosmic dust that trail ahead and behind the Moon. They sit at the L4 and L5 Lagrange points, two theoretically stable regions of space in the Earth–Moon system. Their relative stability inspired Polish astronomer Kazimierz Kordylewski to search their vicinity for co-orbital objects of the Moon. He first spotted the clouds in 1961 from the Tatra Mountains in former Czechoslovakia. Following Kordylewski's discovery, inconsistent observations by other astronomers led to the clouds' existence becoming controversial. Observation attempts were complicated by the clouds' exceedingly dim nature, making them di…

In astronomy, a trojan is a small celestial body (mostly asteroids) that shares the orbit of a larger body, remaining in a stable orbit approximately 60° ahead of or behind the main body near one of its Lagrangian points L4 and L5. Trojans can share the orbits of planets or of large moons. Trojans are one type of co-orbital object. In this arrangement, a star and a planet orbit about their common barycenter, which is close to the center of the star because it is usually much more massive than the orbiting planet. In turn, a much smaller mass than both the star and the planet, located at one of the Lagrangian points of the star–planet system, is subject to a combined gravitational force that…

Lagrange point colonization is a proposed form of space colonization of the five equilibrium points in the orbit of a planet or its primary moon, called Lagrange points. The Lagrange points L4 and L5 are stable if the mass of the larger body is at least 25 times the mass of the secondary body. Thus, the points L4 and L5 in the Earth–Moon system have been proposed as possible sites for space colonies. The L5 Society was founded to promote settlement by building space stations at these points. Gerard K. O'Neill suggested in 1974 that the Earth–Moon L5 point, in particular, could fit several thousands of floating colonies, and would allow easy travel to and from the colonies due to the shallow…

NASA'S Lucy Mission to Trojan Asteroids: Unraveling the History of the Outer Solar System.. Lucy is a NASA Discovery-class mission to send a highly capable and robust spacecraft to investigate primitive bodies near both the L 4 and L 5 Lagrange points with Jupiter; the Jupiter Trojan asteroids. This heretofore unexplored population of planetesimals from the outer planetary system holds vital clues to deciphering the history of the Solar System. Due to an unusual and fortuitous orbital configuration, Lucy will perform a comprehensive investigation that visits eight Trojans, including all the recognized taxonomic classes, a collisional family member and a near equal-mass bi…

A generalized framework for the collinear restricted four-body problem with a central dominant mass.. This study extends the classical circular restricted three-body problem (CR3BP) by introducing a dominant central primary, forming a collinear restricted four-body problem (CR4BP) that better reflects the dynamics of real planetary systems. The model remains dynamically consistent and non-degenerate when the central mass parameter μ 0 lies in (½, 1) and the peripheral mass μ satisfies 0 0 ). It generalizes to the CR3BP by setting μ 0 = 0, recovering classical results. The system exhibits six libration points: four collinear and two symmetric non-collinear points forming an isosceles triangl…
