Bilingual youth. District and school-level leaders continue to experience ongoing challenges in the design and in the implementation of supports for immigrant youth that have recently arrived in the United States (U.S.), who speak little to no English, and who are unfamiliar with the U.S. school system (Umansky, et al, 2020). There has also been an increased demand placed on education systems by these youth, with states and local education agencies struggling to address their needs (Sugarman, 2015). With the high rates of these recently arrived youth in the U.S., school systems are experiencing continued challenges in meeting these youth's needs (Sugarman, 2015). The challenge of meeting th…

Negotiating Space and Making Place: Punjabi-Sikh Cabbies in New York City. I examine how immigrant Punjabi-Sikhs make sense of themselves as yellow cabbies in New York with two complementary frameworks—Hill Collins’ “matrix of domination” and insights from the literature exploring the interplay between race and ethnicity. The cabbies discussed their immigrant status, non-whiteness, and social class as influential, emphasizing the effects of all three forms of marginalization as occurring simultaneously. They deployed “money” to frame this subordination and to negotiate dimensions of social location and identity. The transnational space they occupied emerges noteworthy too in their identity…

Educational Selectivity and Language Acquisition among Recently Arrived Immigrants. This article investigates destination language proficiency upon arrival and subsequent proficiency growth among recently arrived immigrants in Germany, Great Britain, and Ireland. We introduce selectivity considerations to a model of language acquisition, arguing that positively selected individuals should display higher levels of language skills upon arrival and faster growth in destination language proficiency thereafter. The results show that upon arrival, positively selected immigrants are less proficient, holding absolute levels of educational attainment constant. In terms of language proficiency growth…

Destination-language acquisition of recently arrived immigrants: Do refugees differ from other immigrants?. This article describes new immigrants’ levels of destination-language proficiency shortly after taking up residence in Germany. The focus lies on a comparison of refugees from Syria with new arrivals from Italy, Poland, and Turkey, who came as economic immigrants, for family reasons, or as students. The theoretical account builds upon a well-established model of language acquisition, according to which language fluency is a function of exposure, efficiency, and incentives. The empirical study is based on data from the first wave of the ENTRA project (“Recent Immigration Processes and…

Health Insurance and Primary Care Access for Taxi/FHV Drivers in New York City: Trends from 2015-2018.. There are hundreds of thousands of metropolitan United States taxi and for-hire vehicle (FHV) drivers who lack health insurance and have limited access to primary care. The Affordable Care Act provided increased opportunities for insurance coverage. The current study used a 1,864 person 2015-2018 NYC taxi/FHV driver dataset, which included health insurance coverage and primary care access information. The data revealed an increase in insurance coverage and primary care uptake across the four years, from 40% to 63% and 52% to 60%, respectively. Drivers' age, region of birth, and hours driv…
