In road transport, a lane is part of a roadway that is designated to be used by a single line of vehicles to control and guide drivers and reduce traffic conflicts. Most public roads (highways) have at least two lanes, one for traffic in each direction, generally separated by lane markings. On multilane roadways and busier two-lane roads, lanes are generally designated with road surface markings. Major highways often have two multi-lane roadways separated by a median. Some roads and bridges that carry very low volumes of traffic are less than 4.6 metres (15 ft) wide, and are only a single lane wide. Vehicles travelling in opposite directions must slow or stop to pass each other. In rural ar…

Mixed-Effects Zero-Inflated Negative Binomial Crash Predictive Models for Unsignalized Intersections along Two-Lane Highways with Minor Roads Operating with Very Low Traffic Volumes. Current and past investigations into road accidents have mainly focused on high-volume roads which have experienced a significant number of collisions. However, low-volume roads also record crash data which merit analysis to understand the causes of accidents and find potential countermeasures. This study focuses on unsignalized intersections linking major highways and minor stop-controlled local roads that operate with very low traffic volumes. In this scenario, an over-abundance of zero observations has to be…

Risk factors for traffic violations and serious crash casualties in rural areas: a comparison of urban-rural differences in China.. Introduction Rural areas are typically characterized by poor traffic conditions, less road supervision, and more illegal driving behaviors. These factors lead to significantly higher mortality and increased rates of road traffic crashes in rural areas than in urban areas. Therefore, an in-depth study of traffic risk factors in the rural areas of developing countries with large rural populations and extensive rural road coverage is particularly urgent and important. Method Based on the report data of 38,458 traffic crash occurring in rural areas of Guangdong Pro…

Methodology for determining traffic volume for the analysis of roads efficiency. The present paper outlines the results of analyses of two hundred highest hourly volumes in a year, used for determining designed hourly volumes DHV to test road efficiency. Basing on them, three equations of the power function were elaborated. They enabled the assessment of traffic volume corresponding to a randomly chosen peak-hour in a year, depending on the value of annual average daily traffic AADT (below or above 25000 V/d), the share of heavy vehicles (below or above 30%), and the type of cross-section (1x2 or 1x4/2x2). In case of two-lane roads (1x2) the variation of direction distribution and per weekd…
