Massachusetts was the first U.S. state to issue license plates on September 1, 1903. Plates are currently issued by the Massachusetts Registry of Motor Vehicles (RMV). All plates since 1978 are currently valid. Prior to 1993, only rear plates were required; since the first "Spirit of America" plate was issued in 1986, front and rear plates have been required since. As such, the 1978-1993 issues continue to only require the rear plate, while the "Spirit of America" issues since 1986 require front and rear plates. The very first Massachusetts license plate, "1", is still in use today. It was issued to Frederick Tudor, who also received the first license issued. He got the plate due to his wor…

In the United States, vehicle registration plates, known as license plates, are issued by a department of motor vehicles, an agency of the state or territorial government, or in the case of the District of Columbia, the district government. Some Native American tribes also issue plates. The U.S. federal government issues plates only for its own vehicle fleet and for vehicles owned by foreign diplomats. Prior to 1984, diplomatic plates were issued by jurisdiction, meaning that the District of Columbia was responsible for all foreign embassies in the United States, and the state of New York for all foreign missions accredited to the United Nations. The appearances of plates are frequently cho…

Toxoplasma gondii, suicidal behaviour and suicide risk factors in US Veterans enrolled in mental health treatment.. Markers of chronic infection Toxoplasma gondii (Nicolle et Manceaux, 1908) have been associated with suicidal self-directed violence (SSDV). We present the results of the first study relating T. gondii IgG serology with suicide attempts and suicidal ideation in United States Veterans, known to have higher suicide rates than members of the general population. We also related T. gondii serology to SSDV risk factors, including valid and reliable measures of trait impulsivity, aggression, self-reported depression, and sleep disturbance. We recruited 407 Veterans enrolled at three…

Can speed cameras make streets safer? Quasi-experimental evidence from New York City.. Each year, approximately 40,000 people die in vehicle collisions in the United States, generating $340 billion in economic costs. To make roads safer without expanding police contact, many cities have turned to automated traffic enforcement, cameras that detect and fine speeding motorists. Does automated enforcement reduce vehicle collisions and injuries? Many previous studies are limited to correlational evidence. By contrast, this study estimates the causal effect of automated enforcement on road safety in a difference-in-differences design. We exploit the staggered rollout of 2,000 speed cameras across…

The U.S. state of Washington first required its residents to register their motor vehicles in 1905. Registrants provided their own license plates for display until 1915, when the state began to issue plates. As of 2023, plates are issued by the Washington State Department of Licensing. Front and rear plates are required for most classes of vehicles, while only rear plates are required for motorcycles and trailers. The plates have been manufactured by incarcerated workers managed by the Washington State Department of Corrections since 1923. They are primarily produced at the Washington State Penitentiary in Walla Walla, with some also made at the Monroe Correctional Complex in Monroe.

In the United States, the appearance of license plates is frequently chosen to contain symbols, colors, or slogans associated with the issuing jurisdiction, which are the 50 U.S. states, the District of Columbia, the five inhabited U.S. territories, and Native American tribes, each of which independently registers motor vehicles. Regular-issue license plates for passenger vehicles typically have six or seven characters, with vanity plates having up to eight characters in a few states.
