PAX3 haploinsufficiency in Maine Coon cats with dominant blue eyes and hearing loss resembling the human Waardenburg syndrome. Abstract This study investigated the dominant blue eyes (DBE) trait linked to hearing impairment and variable white spotting in Maine Coon cats. Fifty-eight animals descending from 2 different DBE lineages, the Dutch and the Topaz lines, were sampled. They comprised 48 cats from the Dutch bloodline, including 9 green-eyed and 31 blue-eyed cats, with some individuals exhibiting signs of deafness, and 8 stillborn kittens. Samples from the Topaz lineage included 10 blue-eyed animals. A brainstem auditory evoked response test revealed a reduced to absent response…

The Turkish Van is a semi-long-haired, standardised breed of domestic cat, which was developed during the 1950s in the United Kingdom from a selection of cats obtained from various cities of modern-day Turkey, especially southeast Turkey. This rare cat breed is one of the larger ones, and is distinguished by the Van pattern (named after the breed), where the colour is restricted to the head and the tail, and the rest of the cat is white; this is due to the expression of the white spotting gene, a type of partial leucism. A Turkish Van may have blue or orange eyes, or be odd-eyed (having one eye of each colour). The breed was initially registered under the name Turkish cat in 1969 by UK-base…

Whole-genome sequencing of CRFK and PG-4 cells to infer the phenotype of the original donor cats. Background Crandell-Rees Feline Kidney (CRFK; kidney-derived) cells and PG-4 cells (astrocyte-derived) have been in use and have been passaged for decades in laboratories worldwide; however, no detailed information on the genetic background of the donor individuals is available, particularly regarding phenotype characteristics such as coat and iris color. Results We performed whole-genome sequencing of CRFK and PG-4 cells. We analyzed the resulting data to infer the phenotype of the individual from which the cells were derived, specifically for the coat color, coat length, coat pattern, and iri…

Hereditary Deafness in the White Cat. The coat colour, hair length and iris colour characteristics and the incidence of hereditary deafness are described for a population of 96 cats. The incidence of inner ear degeneration varied from 20 % to 86 %, being dependent on the genetic composition of the population under consideration. The scope of further publications on hereditary deafness in the white cat is outlined.. Source: Acta Oto-Laryngologica. Year: 1973

Cat genetics describes the study of inheritance as it occurs in domestic cats. In feline husbandry, it can predict established traits (phenotypes) of the offspring of particular crosses. In medical genetics, cat models are occasionally used to discover the function of homologous human disease genes. The domesticated cat and its closest wild ancestor are both diploid organisms that possess 38 chromosomes and roughly 20,000 genes. About 250 heritable genetic disorders have been identified in cats, many similar to human inborn errors. The high level of similarity among the metabolisms of mammals allows many of these feline diseases to be diagnosed using genetic tests that were originally devel…
