Antlions are poorly represented in the fossil record.
Pełniejszy materiał źródłowy / excerpt
The antlions are a group of about 2,000 species of insect in the neuropteran family Myrmeleontidae. They are known for the predatory habits of their larvae, which mostly dig pits to trap passing ants or other prey. In North America, the larvae are sometimes referred to as doodlebugs because of the marks they leave in the sand. The adult insects are less well known due to their relatively short lifespans in comparison with the larvae. Adults, sometimes known as antlion lacewings, mostly fly at dusk or just after dark and may be mistakenly identified as dragonflies or damselflies. Antlions have a worldwide distribution. The greatest diversity occurs in the tropics, but a few species are found in cold-temperate locations, one such being the European Euroleon nostras. They most commonly occur in dry and sandy habitats where the larvae can easily excavate their pits, but some larvae hide under debris or ambush their prey among leaf litter. Antlions are poorly represented in the fossil record. Myrmeleontiformia is generally accepted to be a monophyletic group, and within the Myrmeleontoidea, the antlions' closest living relatives are thought to be the owlflies (Ascalaphidae). A 2019 study finds Myrmeleontidae to be monophyletic, aside from Stilbopteryginae and Palparinae, which form separate clades closer to Ascalaphidae. The predatory actions of the larvae have attracted attention…

The earliest fossil record of the poorly known family Condylocardiidae from Argentina. The scarcely known family Condylocardiidae (Bivalvia: Archiheterodonta) is poorly represented in the fossil record and their living representatives are also poorly known. This work presents a new representative of the family from the early Pliocene of marine terrace of Cerro Laciar (Santa Cruz Province). Carditella pitufina sp. nov. is described and characterized by a shell large for the genus, 15 radial ribs as wide as interspaces, high hinge plate and broad and large hinge teeth. The poor record of the family may be due to an identification bias, probably because the tiny size of specimens and its simil…

Diverse Cretaceous larvae reveal the evolutionary and behavioural history of antlions and lacewings.. Myrmeleontiformia are an ancient group of lacewing insects characterized by predatory larvae with unusual morphologies and behaviours. Mostly soil dwellers with a soft cuticle, their larvae fossilize only as amber inclusions, and thus their fossil record is remarkably sparse. Here, we document a disparate assemblage of myrmeleontiform larvae from the mid-Cretaceous amber (99 Ma) of Myanmar, evidence of a considerable diversification. Our cladistic analysis integrating extant and extinct taxa resolves the fossils as both stem- and crown-groups. Similarities between extinct and extant species…

The Diversity of Spoon-Winged and Thread-Winged Lacewing Larvae Today and in Deep Time-An Expanded View.. Larvae of lacewings (Neuroptera) are (mostly) ferocious predators, and the most well known are the larvae of antlions. In the larger group of antlion-like lacewings, the larvae resemble those of antlions to a certain degree but have certain peculiarities. Larvae of the group Nemopteridae can be easily separated into two groups: the larvae of Crocinae (thread-winged lacewings), also known as long-necked antlions, have relatively slender mouthparts and long necks, as the name suggests; the larvae of Nemopterinae (spoon-winged lacewings) have stout mouthparts and bodies. We here report new…
