A lost city is an urban settlement that fell into terminal decline and became extensively or completely uninhabited, with the consequence that the site's former significance was no longer known to the wider world. The locations of many lost cities have been forgotten, but some have been rediscovered and studied extensively by scientists. Recently abandoned cities or cities whose location was never in question might be referred to as ruins or ghost towns. Smaller settlements may be referred to as abandoned villages. The search for such lost cities by European explorers and adventurers in Africa, the Americas, and Southeast Asia from the 15th century onward eventually contributed to the devel…

It provides a longer term history of such child refugees by incorporating the experiences of Serbian refugees who were sent to British schools in the First World War and how and why they have subsequently been forgotten. The Absence of Yellow Fever in Asia: History, Hypotheses, Vector Dispersal, Possibility of YF in Asia, and Other Enigmas.. Since the recent epidemics of yellow fever in Angola and Brazil as well as the importation of cases to China in 2016, there has been an increased interest in the century-old enigma, absence of yellow fever in Asia. This article presents a list of notable historical references to the name Palestine as a place name for the region of Palestine throughout history. This includes uses of the localized inflections in various languages, such as Latin Palaestina and Arabic Filasṭīn. The term Peleset is found in five inscriptions referring to a neighboring people, starting from c. 1150 BCE during the Twentieth Dynasty of Egypt. The word is transliterated from hieroglyphs as P-r-s-t-w, as Egyptians did not use the consonant "l" in writing, substituting it with "r" instead, and it is generally accepted that this is an ethnonym referring to the Philistines. The Assyrians used the terms "Palashtu/Palastu" or "Pilis…

Human Pressure Structures Range Contraction and Recovery Potential of the Snow Leopard.. Human-driven environmental change is rapidly altering species distributions worldwide, and anthropogenic activities are widely recognized as major drivers of range contraction and population decline. However, how human pressure interacts with other ecological processes to shape spatial patterns of persistence and recovery potential remains less well understood. Here, we present a spatially explicit framework integrating historical and current distributions with global human footprint data to quantify how human pressure influences range dynamics in the snow leopard ( Panthera uncia ). We classified the s…

Two Lost Cities. In Chapter Three, “Two Lost Cities,” the nostalgic focus is the recollections by local residents of two transformed mid-twentieth century metropolises, the borough of Brooklyn in New York City and Detroit, Michigan. In the chapter’s introductory section, the analysis to follow is linked to cultural critic Raymond Williams’ notion of pastoral and counter-pastoral narratives. The twentieth century evolutions of Brooklyn and Detroit have been copiously documented via individual memoirs, oral history projects, local journalism, and realist fiction. The core of this chapter’s argument is derived from an extended, comparative examination of these local sources: that there are dis…

Atlantis (Ancient Greek: Ἀτλαντὶς νῆσος, romanized: Atlantìs nêsos, lit. 'island of Atlas') is a fictional island mentioned in Plato's works Timaeus and Critias as part of an allegory on the hubris of nations. By describing Atlantis as a naval empire from the west that had conquered most of Europe and Libya, Plato purposely created a literary contrast with the Achaemenid Empire, the great land-based power that ruled the east (what the Greeks called Asia). In Plato's account, Atlantis loses divine favor after an ill-fated campaign against a fictionalized Athens, and subsequently submerges into the Atlantic Ocean. By portraying the victorious Athens in the image of his ideal state from the Re…
