The vulva can be affected by many disorders, which may often result in irritation.
Pełniejszy materiał źródłowy / excerpt
In mammals, the vulva (pl. vulvas or vulvae) comprises mostly external, visible structures of the female genitalia leading into the interior of the female reproductive tract. For humans, it includes the mons pubis, labia majora, labia minora, clitoris, vestibule, urinary meatus, vaginal introitus, hymen, and openings of the vestibular glands (Bartholin's and Skene's). The folds of the outer and inner labia provide a double layer of protection for the vagina (which leads to the uterus). While the vagina is a separate part of the anatomy, colloquially the term has often been used synonymously with vulva. Pelvic floor muscles support the structures of the vulva. Other muscles of the urogenital triangle also give support. Blood supply to the vulva comes from the three pudendal arteries. The internal pudendal veins give drainage. Afferent lymph vessels carry lymph away from the vulva to the inguinal lymph nodes. The nerves that supply the vulva are the pudendal nerve, perineal nerve, ilioinguinal nerve and their branches. Blood and nerve supply to the vulva contribute to the stages of sexual arousal that are helpful in the reproduction process. Following the development of the vulva, changes take place at birth, childhood, puberty, menopause and post-menopause. There is a great deal of variation in the appearance of the vulva, particularly in relation to the labia minora. The vulva…

Vulvar cancer is a cancer of the vulva, the outer portion of the female genitals. It most commonly affects the labia majora. Less often, the labia minora, clitoris, or Bartholin's glands are affected. Symptoms include a lump, itchiness, changes in the skin, or bleeding from the vulva. Risk factors include vulvar intraepithelial neoplasia (VIN), HPV infection, genital warts, smoking, and many sexual partners. Most vulvar cancers are squamous cell cancers. Other types include adenocarcinoma, melanoma, sarcoma, and basal cell carcinoma. Diagnosis is suspected based on physical examination and confirmed by tissue biopsy. Routine screening is not recommended. Prevention may include HPV vaccinati…

Vulvar Care: Reviewing Concepts in Daily Hygiene.. Vulvar hygiene is an important part of general hygiene: the goals are to clear the vulvar area of microbial and cellular debris and vaginal and fecal secretions, ensure local comfort, provide natural levels of hydration, and protect the vulvar microbiota. There are few national and international guidelines on vulvar hygiene. We searched the PubMed database up until 30 November 2024, using logical combinations of the following terms: hygiene, washing, vulva, vulvar, microbiota, hydration, syndet, soap, detergent, water, and customs. The abstracts were reviewed, and potentially relevant full-text articles were retrieved and examined. The subr…

The vagina (pl.: vaginas or vaginae) is the elastic, muscular reproductive organ of the female genital tract through which mammals copulate and give birth. In humans, it extends from the vulval vestibule to the cervix (neck of the uterus). The vaginal introitus is normally partly covered by a thin layer of mucosal tissue called the hymen. The vagina also channels menstrual flow, which occurs in humans and closely related primates as part of the menstrual cycle. During sexual intercourse, the vaginal walls produce vaginal lubrication and create friction which stimulates the penis toward ejaculation, enabling fertilization. Along with pleasure and bonding, sexual activity can cause sexually t…
