Pełniejszy materiał źródłowy / excerpt
The Selfish Gene is a 1976 popular science book by Richard Dawkins that espouses the gene-centred view of evolution. It builds upon the thesis of George Christopher Williams's Adaptation and Natural Selection (1966) and W. D. Hamilton's work on kin selection. From the gene-centred view, it follows that the more genes two individuals share, the more sense it makes for them to co-operate. The book introduced the term meme for a unit of cultural evolution analogous to the gene. Memetics has become a subject in its own right in the years since. In popularising Hamilton's ideas, as well as making its own valuable contributions to the field, the book has also stimulated research on human inclusive fitness. The "selfish gene" is a metaphor for the gene-centred view of evolution. As such, the book is not about a particular gene that causes selfish behaviour; in fact, much of it is devoted to explaining the evolution of altruism. Dawkins says that the title "might give an inadequate impression" of the book's topic and in retrospect wishes he had taken Tom Maschler's advice and titled it The Immortal Gene. He laments that many people "read it by title only." In response, he expanded on the evolution of altruism in the BBC documentary Nice Guys Finish First.

River Out of Eden: A Darwinian View of Life is a 1995 popular science book by Richard Dawkins. The book is about Darwinian evolution and summarizes the topics covered in his earlier books, The Selfish Gene, The Extended Phenotype and The Blind Watchmaker. It is part of the Science Masters series and is Dawkins's shortest book. It is illustrated by Lalla Ward, Dawkins's then-wife. The book's name is derived from Genesis 2:10 relating to the Garden of Eden. The King James Version reads "And a river went out of Eden to water the garden; and from thence it was parted, and became into four heads." River Out of Eden has five chapters. The first chapter lays down the framework on which the rest of…

The Real Selfish Gene: Impact of Repetitive Elements on Read Mapping Accuracy, a Simulation Study. Repetitive elements, often referred to as selfish genes, pose significant challenges to genome assembly and read mapping in bioinformatics. These elements can replicate within the genome without providing functional benefits to the host organism, leading to complexities in accurate genome analysis. This study presents a simulation-based approach to illustrate the impact of repetitive elements on read mapping accuracy. By comparing genome sequences with and without repetitive elements, we demonstrate how these selfish genes create ambiguities and errors in read alignment. The findings underscor…

The Blind Watchmaker: Why the Evidence of Evolution Reveals a Universe without Design (1986) is a popular science book by Richard Dawkins. It explains how the cumulative, nonrandom process of natural selection creates complexity. Dawkins develops themes from, and refutes criticisms of, his first book, The Selfish Gene (1976). It was illustrated by Liz Pyle. It won the Los Angeles Times Book Prize for Current Interest and the Heinemann Award. An audiobook was released, read by Dawkins and Lalla Ward. A computer program of the same name was released and it was the basis for a BBC documentary of the same name. The Economist called it "As readable and vigorous a defense of Darwinism as has been…
