Aquaculture involves cultivating freshwater, brackish water, and saltwater populations under controlled or semi-natural conditions and can be contrasted with commercial fishing, which is the harvesting of wild fish.
Pełniejszy materiał źródłowy / excerpt
Aquaculture (less commonly spelled aquiculture), also known as aquafarming, is the controlled cultivation ("farming") of aquatic organisms such as fish, crustaceans, mollusks, algae and other organisms of value such as aquatic plants (e.g. lotus). Aquaculture involves cultivating freshwater, brackish water, and saltwater populations under controlled or semi-natural conditions and can be contrasted with commercial fishing, which is the harvesting of wild fish. Aquaculture is also a practice used for restoring and rehabilitating marine and freshwater ecosystems. Mariculture, commonly known as marine farming, is aquaculture in seawater habitats and lagoons, as opposed to freshwater aquaculture. Pisciculture is a type of aquaculture that consists of fish farming to obtain fish products as food. Aquaculture can also be defined as the breeding, growing, and harvesting of fish and other aquatic plants, also known as farming in water. It is an environmental source of food and commercial products that help to improve healthier habitats and are used to reconstruct the population of endangered aquatic species. Technology has increased the growth of fish in coastal marine waters and open oceans due to the increased demand for seafood. Aquaculture can be conducted in completely artificial facilities built on land (onshore aquaculture), as in the case of fish tank, ponds, aquaponics or race…

Towards the Establishment of a Sea Urchin Sperm Biobank: Key Challenges and Opportunities for the Conservation and Sustainable Aquaculture of Paracentrotus lividus.. The Mediterranean Sea urchin Paracentrotus lividus is a key benthic herbivore and a valuable fishery resource because of the high commercial and gastronomic value of its edible gonads. Increasing market demand, overharvesting, climate change, habitat degradation, and pollution have contributed to the decline of wild populations in several Mediterranean areas. This narrative review, including a preliminary case study, provides an integrated perspective on the role of P. lividus in conservation-oriented aquacul…

The aquaculture of salmonids is the farming and harvesting of salmonid fish under controlled conditions for both commercial and recreational purposes. Salmonids (particularly salmon and rainbow trout), along with carp and tilapia, are the three most important fish groups in aquaculture. The most commonly commercially farmed salmonid is the Atlantic salmon (Salmo salar). In the United States, Chinook salmon and rainbow trout are the most commonly farmed salmonids for recreational and subsistence fishing through the National Fish Hatchery System. In Europe, brown trout are the most commonly reared fish for recreational restocking. Commonly farmed non-salmonid fish groups include tilapia, catf…

A wetland is a distinct semi-aquatic ecosystem whose groundcovers are flooded or saturated in water, either permanently, for years or decades, or only seasonally. Flooding results in oxygen-poor (anoxic) processes taking place, especially in the soils. Wetlands form a transitional zone between waterbodies and dry lands, and are different from other terrestrial or aquatic ecosystems due to their vegetation's roots having adapted to oxygen-poor waterlogged soils. They are considered among the most biologically diverse of all ecosystems, serving as habitats to a wide range of aquatic and semi-aquatic plants and animals, with often improved water quality due to plant removal of excess nutrients…

Uneven seas: seabed litter hotspots, diffuse losses, and the mitigation power of fishing fleets.. This study evaluates the efficacy and spatial dynamics of passive Fishing for Litter (FFL) schemes in the Northern Adriatic (Goro) and Southern Tyrrhenian (Salerno) seas. The primary research question is to determine how distinct regional maritime activities and fishing effort influence the quantity, composition, and removal efficiency of seafloor macrolitter. Over a six-month period (2022-2023), 14 commercial bottom trawlers collected litter during routine operations. Despite comparable fleet characteristics, results revealed pronounced spatial heterogeneity; area-standardized removal reached…

The environmental impact of fishing includes issues such as the availability of fish, overfishing, fisheries, and fisheries management; as well as the impact of industrial fishing on other elements of the environment, such as bycatch. These issues are part of marine conservation, and are addressed in fisheries science programs. According to a 2019 FAO report, global production of fish, crustaceans, molluscs and other aquatic animals has continued to grow and reached 172.6 million tonnes in 2017, with an increase of 4.1 percent compared with 2016. There is a growing gap between the supply of fish and demand, due in part to world population growth. Fishing and pollution from fishing are the l…

Re-evaluation of certain aspects of the EFSA Scientific Opinion of April 2010 on risk assessment of parasites in fishery products, based on new scientific data. Part 1: ToRs1-3.. Surveillance data published since 2010, although limited, showed that there is no evidence of zoonotic parasite infection in market quality Atlantic salmon, marine rainbow trout, gilthead seabream, turbot, meagre, Atlantic halibut, common carp and European catfish. No studies were found for greater amberjack, brown trout, African catfish, European eel and pikeperch. Anisakis pegreffii , A. simplex (s. s.) and Cryptocotyle lingua were found in European seabass, Atlantic bluefin tuna and/or cod, and Pseudamphistomum…

Synergistic DTPA-functionalized alginate/ZIF-90-derived oxide composite for ultraefficient removal of lead and methylene blue from aquaculture wastewater.. Industrial wastewater often contains various pollutants such as heavy metals and organic dyes, but most of the current adsorbents only show high performance under single-substance conditions and are still limited in adsorption capacity, kinetic rate, and reusability. To address this research gap, the work proposes a ZZO@ALG-DTPA composite material integrating ZIF-90/zeolite hybrid oxide (ZZO) and Diethylenetriaminepentaacetic acid-functionalized alginate (ALG-DTPA), creating a multifunctional adsorption platform for the separate treatmen…

Assessment of water prophylaxis and biosafety in finfish aquaculture - current and emerging technologies.. Effective water quality management is a fundamental component of disease prevention, fish welfare, and sustainable production in finfish aquaculture. As aquaculture continues to expand to meet increasing global food demand, maintaining biosafe aquatic environments has become increasingly challenging due to production intensification, climate change, emerging pathogens, and the spread of antimicrobial resistance. While conventional approaches such as mechanical filtration, biofiltration, ultraviolet disinfection, ozonation, and water exchange remain central to water prophylaxis, increas…

Professional diving is underwater diving where the divers are paid for their work. Occupational diving has a similar meaning and applications. The procedures are often regulated by legislation and codes of practice as it is an inherently hazardous occupation and the diver works as a member of a team. Due to the dangerous nature of some professional diving operations, specialized equipment such as an on-site hyperbaric chamber and diver-to-surface communication system is often required by law, and the mode of diving for some applications may be regulated. There are several branches of professional diving, the best known of which is probably commercial diving and its specialised applications,…
