In 2018, US exports of coal, natural gas, crude oil and petroleum products exceeded imports, achieving a degree of energy independence for the first time in decades.
Pełniejszy materiał źródłowy / excerpt
The energy policy of the United States is determined by federal, state, and local entities. Federal Energy policy is principally led by the U.S. Department of Energy. Energy policy intersects closely with decarbonization, climate policy, and environmental policy. Energy policy spans issues of decarbonization, energy production, distribution, consumption, and modes of use, such as building codes, mileage standards, and commuting policies. U.S. energy policy may be addressed via legislation, regulation, court decisions, public participation, and other techniques. Major federal energy policy acts were passed in 1974, 1992, 2005, 2007, 2008, 2009, 2020, 2021, and 2022, although energy-related policies have appeared in many other bills. The most significant recent bills include the Biden Administration Inflation Reduction Act as well as the Bipartisan Infrastructure Law. State and local energy policies typically relate to efficiency standards and/or transportation. Federal energy policies since the 1973 oil crisis have been criticized for having an alleged crisis-mentality, promoting expensive quick fixes and single-shot solutions that ignore market and technology realities. Americans constitute less than 5% of the world's population but consume 26% of the world's energy to produce 26% of the world's industrial output. Technologies such as fracking and horizontal drilling allowed t…

Petroleum production in Canada is a major industry which is important to the overall economy of North America. Canada has the third largest oil reserves in the world and is the world's fourth largest oil producer and fourth largest oil exporter. In 2019 it produced an average of 750,000 cubic metres per day (4.7 Mbbl/d) of crude oil and equivalent. Of that amount, 64% was upgraded from unconventional oil sands, and the remainder light crude oil, heavy crude oil and natural-gas condensate. Most of the Canadian petroleum production is exported, approximately 600,000 cubic metres per day (3.8 Mbbl/d) in 2019, with 98% of the exports going to the United States. Canada is by far the largest sing…

Energy is a major area of the economy of California, as it has the largest population and the largest economy in the United States. As of 2024, it is second in total energy consumption after Texas, though per capita consumption was the third-lowest in the United States partially because of the mild climate and energy efficiency programs. In 2023, 45% of energy consumption was used for transportation, with California being the largest consumer of jet fuel, and the second largest consumer of gasoline after Texas. The state uses more than 1 million barrels of refined products daily. While California was the eighth-largest producer of crude oil among the 50 states in 2024, it still imports 75%…

The Oil and Natural Gas Corporation Limited (ONGC) is an Indian central public sector undertaking which is the largest government-owned oil and gas explorer and producer in the country. It accounts for around 70 per cent of India's domestic production of crude oil and around 84 per cent of natural gas. Headquartered in Delhi, ONGC is under the ownership of the Government of India and administration of Ministry of Petroleum and Natural Gas. It was founded on 14 August 1956 by the Government of India under Prime Minister Jawaharlal Nehru. In November 2010, the Government of India conferred the Maharatna status to ONGC. In a survey by the Government of India for fiscal year 2019–20, it was ran…

The 2020s energy crisis was an energy crisis that began in the aftermath of the COVID-19 pandemic, resulting in shortages and increased prices in oil, gas and electricity markets. The crisis was particularly acute in Europe, and especially following the Russian invasion of Ukraine, the energy crisis became popularly associated with Europe. The crisis was caused by a variety of economic factors, including the rapid post-pandemic economic rebound that outpaced energy supply, and escalated into a widespread global energy crisis. The price of natural gas reached record highs, and as a result, so did electricity in some markets. Oil prices hit their highest level since 2008. Higher energy prices…

Nuclear phase-out: Can we catch up on CO2 emissions?. Nuclear energy is classified as a low-carbon energy source by institutions such as the European Union, due to its negligible direct carbon dioxide (CO2) emissions. Nevertheless, following major nuclear incidents such as Fukushima, several countries have implemented nuclear phase-out programs driven by safety concerns. This has raised critical questions about whether the reduction in nuclear capacity would be compensated for by an increase in renewable energy or by a return to fossil fuel-based generation. In this paper, we analyze the trajectory of CO2 emissions from fossil fuel energy sources (specifically coal, oil, and gas) in Germany…

Liquefied natural gas (sometimes liquid natural gas, frequently LNG) is natural gas (predominantly methane, CH4, with some mixture of ethane, C2H6) that has been cooled to liquid form for ease and safety of non-pressurized storage or transport. It takes up approximately 1/600th the volume of natural gas in the gaseous state at standard temperature and pressure. LNG is odorless, colorless, non-toxic, and non-corrosive. Hazards include flammability after vaporization into a gaseous state, freezing and asphyxiation. The liquefaction process involves removal of certain components, such as dust, carbon dioxide, helium, water, and heavy hydrocarbons, which could cause process upsets downstream. T…
