Psychotherapy (also psychological therapy, talk therapy, or talking therapy) is the use of psychological methods, particularly when based on regular personal interaction, to help a person change behavior, increase happiness, and overcome problems. Psychotherapy aims to improve an individual's well-being and mental health, to resolve or mitigate troublesome behaviors, beliefs, compulsions, thoughts, or emotions, and to improve relationships and social skills. Numerous types of psychotherapy have been designed either for individual adults, families, or children and adolescents. Some types of psychotherapy are considered evidence-based for treating diagnosed mental disorders; other types have been criticized as pseudoscience. However, at least to some extent, psychotherapies are supported by neuroscience, tend to have longer-lasting effects than pharmacotherapies, and can improve the effects of pharmacotherapies, including those involving psychedelics. There are hundreds of psychotherapy techniques, some being minor variations; others are based on very different conceptions of psychology. Most approaches involve one-to-one sessions, between the client and therapist, but some are conducted with groups, including couples and families. Psychotherapists may be mental health professionals such as psychiatrists, psychologists, mental health nurses, clinical social workers, marriage and…

Neuroscience-Informed Psychoeducation for Psychotherapy: Understanding How Therapy Supports Brain-Based Change. Psychotherapy can be conceptualized as a structured, experience-dependent process of learning supported by neuroplasticity. Although psychotherapies differ in theory, technique, and therapeutic entry points, they may engage overlapping functional domains of therapeutic learning and change. This chapter presents a transdiagnostic, domain-based framework in which neuroplasticity provides the biological capacity for change and learning serves as the overarching therapeutic process. Five interacting domains organize the framework: emotion regulation and threat learning; cognitive cont…

Psychotherapy in An Age of Neuroscience. Psychiatry, once proud of its biopsychosocial model, has now adopted a neuroscience-based approach that strongly favors psychopharmacological treatments and downplays the role of psychotherapies (or social interventions). This kind of practice can be sufficient for the psychoses, but it is neither evidence-based nor beneficial for patients with common mental disorders such as depression, anxiety, substance use, and personality disorders. Current practice derives from a theoretical model in which psychiatry is viewed primarily as an application of neuroscience, with little reference to the vast literature on psychology, social sciences, and psychother…

Maternal depressive symptom trajectories in the first 12 postpartum months and the associated risk correlates.. Postpartum depression has been known to emerge during the peripartum period or within the first 4-6 weeks of childbirth. However, its long-term progression and the underlying mechanisms of its different trajectories remain poorly understood. This longitudinal study examined the diagnostic stability and changes in 191 mothers who were non-depressed (ND), depressed, or had an adjustment disorder (AD). Fine-meshed repeated measures of depressive symptoms from childbirth through 12 months, along with assessments of mother-infant attachment and perceived stress, revealed distinct traje…

Psychedelic therapy (or psychedelic-assisted therapy) refers to the proposed use of psychedelic drugs in mental health treatment practices. The drugs proposed to treat mental disorders and improve well-being include mescaline (peyote), LSD, psilocybin and psilocin (mushrooms), ayahuasca, DMT, 5-MeO-DMT, ibogaine and MDMA. As of 2021, psychedelic drugs are controlled substances in most countries and psychedelic therapy is not legally available outside clinical trials, with some exceptions. The procedure for psychedelic therapy differs from that of therapies using conventional psychiatric medications. While conventional medications are usually taken without supervision at least once daily, in…

This is an alphabetical list of psychotherapies. This list contains some approaches that may not call themselves a psychotherapy but have a similar aim of improving mental health and well-being through talk and other means of communication. In the 20th century, a great number of psychotherapies were created. All of these face continuous change in popularity, methods, and effectiveness. Sometimes they are self-administered, either individually, in pairs, small groups or larger groups. However, a professional practitioner will usually use a combination of therapies and approaches, often in a team treatment process that involves reading/talking/reporting to other professional practitioners. Th…
