Magnetism is the class of physical attributes that occur through a magnetic field, which allows objects to attract or repel each other. Because both electric currents and magnetic moments of elementary particles give rise to a magnetic field, magnetism is one of two aspects of electromagnetism. The familiar effects occur in ferromagnetic materials, which are strongly attracted by magnetic fields and can be magnetized to become permanent magnets, producing magnetic fields themselves. Demagnetizing a magnet is also possible. Only a few substances are ferromagnetic; the most common ones are iron, cobalt, nickel, and their alloys. All substances exhibit some type of magnetism. Magnetic material…

Diamagnetism is a form of magnetic response in materials that describes the property being repelled by an applied magnetic field; application of such creates in them an induced magnetic field in the opposite direction, thus causing a repulsive force. In contrast, paramagnetic and ferromagnetic materials are attracted by a magnetic field. Diamagnetism is a quantum mechanical effect that occurs in all materials; when it is the only contribution to the magnetism, the material is called diamagnetic. In paramagnetic and ferromagnetic substances, the weak diamagnetic force is overcome by the attractive force of magnetic dipoles in the material. The magnetic permeability of diamagnetic materials i…

Paramagnetism is a form of magnetism whereby some materials are weakly attracted by an externally applied magnetic field, and form internal, induced magnetic fields in the direction of the applied magnetic field. In contrast with this behavior, diamagnetic materials are repelled by magnetic fields and form induced magnetic fields in the direction opposite to that of the applied magnetic field. Paramagnetic materials include most chemical elements and some compounds; they have a relative magnetic permeability slightly greater than 1 (i.e., a small positive magnetic susceptibility) and hence are attracted to magnetic fields. The magnetic moment induced by the applied field is linear in the fi…

In magnetism and electromagnetism, magnetic field is a physical property of space that quantifies the magnetic influence at a given location. Magnetic fields deflect moving electric charges (including electric currents) apply torques on magnets to twist them in the direction of the magnetic field attract or repel magnets and magnetic material such as iron induce electric currents in electrically conducting material. Magnetic fields are created by permanent magnetic materials moving electric charges (including electric current). Magnetic fields are used throughout modern science and technology. In electrical engineering and electromechanics, it is important in the design and use of electric…

Antiferromagnetism is a type of magnetic ordering, along with ferromagnetism and ferrimagnetism. In antiferromagnets the individual magnetic dipoles are oriented in a way such that the bulk of the material has a vanishing total magnetization. In the simplest model, as shown in the picture on the right, neighboring moments in an ordered lattice are oriented antiparallel to one another. Since there are multiple ways of arranging magnetic moments on a lattice (especially in three dimensions), there exist various types of antiferromagnetic ordering. By definition, collinear antiferromagnets are Néel-ordered magnets whose magnetic sublattices are related to each other by a combination of symmetr…
