The Eurasian goshawk (; Astur gentilis) is a species of medium-large bird of prey in the family Accipitridae, a family which also includes other extant diurnal raptors, such as eagles, buzzards and harriers. It was formerly placed in the genus Accipiter. It is a widespread species that inhabits many of the temperate parts of Eurasia. Except in a small portion of southern Asia, it is the only species of "goshawk" in its range and it is thus often referred to, both officially and unofficially, as simply goshawk. It is mainly resident, but birds from colder regions migrate south for the winter. As of 2023, goshawks found in North America are no longer considered to be conspecific, but are now…

Goshawk may refer to several species of birds of prey in the family Accipitridae: Palearctic Eurasian goshawk, Astur gentilis, often referred to simply as the goshawk, since it is the only goshawk found in much of its range (in Europe and Asia). Nearctic American goshawk, Astur atricapillus, often referred to simply as the goshawk, since it is the only goshawk found in much of its range (in North America). Afrotropical African goshawk, Aerospiza tachiro Red-chested goshawk, Aerospiza toussenelii Henst's goshawk, Astur henstii Pale chanting goshawk, Melierax canorus Dark chanting goshawk, Melierax metabates Eastern chanting goshawk, Melierax poliopterus Gabar goshawk, Micronisus gabar Little…

The Eurasian sparrowhawk (Accipiter nisus), also known as the northern sparrowhawk or simply the sparrowhawk, is a small bird of prey in the family Accipitridae. Adult male Eurasian sparrowhawks have bluish grey upperparts and orange-barred underparts; females and juveniles are brown above with brown barring below. The female is up to 25% larger than the male – one of the greatest size differences between the sexes in any bird species. Though it is a predator which specialises in catching woodland birds, the Eurasian sparrowhawk can be found in any habitat and often hunts garden birds in towns and cities. Males tend to take smaller birds, including tits, finches and sparrows; females catch…

The Eurasian eagle-owl (Bubo bubo) is a species of eagle-owl, a type of bird that resides much over Eurasia. It is often just called the eagle-owl in Europe and Asia. It is one of the largest species of owl. Females can grow to a total length of 75 cm (30 in), with a wingspan of 188 centimetres (6 feet 2 inches). Males are slightly smaller. This bird has distinctive ear tufts, with upper parts that are mottled with darker blackish colouring and tawny. The wings and tail are barred. The underparts are a variably hued buff, streaked with darker colouring. The facial disc is not very defined. The orange eyes are distinctive. At least 12 subspecies of the Eurasian eagle-owl are described. Euras…

Colonisation of the Eurasian Goshawk Astur gentilis into an urban environment in Finland. There are several hypotheses for the significance of urban colonisation of animals but an exhaustive explanation is still missing. The question arises: is the colonisation a successful process or a detrimental misstep? Here, I describe the first case of urban colonisation of the Eurasian Goshawk in Finland, where the species is traditionally known as a shy, resident bird of remote wilderness and rural areas. I predict, that if the urban habitats are more favourable for goshawks than the habitats in Finland in general, 1) population trends should be more positive, 2) breeding output should be higher, an…

Siberian roe deer (<i>Capreolus pygargus</i>) as an intermediate host of <i>Taenia lynciscapreoli</i> in Kazakhstan: molecular evidence.. Taenia lynciscapreoli was recently reported from Eurasian lynx ( Lynx lynx ) in northern Kazakhstan, but its intermediate host in the country remains unknown. The aim of this study was to investigate, using molecular methods, whether Siberian roe deer ( Capreolus pygargus ) serve as intermediate hosts of T. lynciscapreoli in Kazakhstan. Fifteen Siberian roe deer were legally harvested in three hunting grounds in north-central and eastern Kazakhstan between September 2024 and December 2025. Taenia metacestodes were detected exclusiv…

Diverse foraging strategies of an avian apex predator in an old-growth forest.. Organisms aim to maximize their energy intake while minimizing the energy expended during foraging. However, as the environmental conditions vary in space and time, they have to adjust foraging strategies accordingly. The Eurasian Goshawk (Astur gentilis) is an iconic bird of prey widely regarded as a sentinel species of valuable old-growth forests. However, as a flexible raptor, it also thrives in other landscape types, such as agricultural and urban environments. We used GPS telemetry to track the movements of 13 male Goshawks breeding in the largest remaining temperate lowland old-growth forest in Europe, the…

The American goshawk (Astur atricapillus) is a species of raptor in the family Accipitridae. It was first described by Alexander Wilson in 1812. The American goshawk was previously considered conspecific with the Eurasian goshawk but was assigned to a separate species in 2023 based on differences in morphology, vocalizations, and genetic divergence. It was formerly placed in the genus Accipiter. It is mainly resident, but birds from colder regions migrate south for the winter. In North America, migratory goshawks are often seen migrating south along mountain ridge tops at nearly any time of the fall depending on latitude.
